NoI wouldn't touch Gloucester with a barge pole I'm afraid... Cheltenham is nicer if you do want to live in that area of the country, although it does have its rough areas, like any town.
Why not try a bit further north? You could get lots more for your money further north, in a much nicer area, or if you were prepared to take on a small mortgage (£20/30k) you'd have access to larger/nicer properties in better areas in many parts of the country. Unfortunately, £100k doesn't buy you all that much in southern England...0 -
YesWe actually moved south of Gloucester earlier this year from Cheltenham and I much prefer it. Definately avoid Kingsway like the plague though. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0

NoI live in Stroud, one of the small towns around Gloucester, and it's lovely. We regard Cheltenham as the posh lot, and Gloucester as the chavvy lot. It does vary a lot depending on which part of Gloucester though.
You could probably work all this out by looking at the house prices though, which pretty much reflect what I said above.0 -
NoI lived in Cheltenham for the first 22 years of my life and pretty much EVERYONE there looks down their nose at Gloucester. My boyfriend is from Nottingham (where I now live) and his first experience of Gloucester involved watching a man who had his shopping stolen from underneath a toilet cubicle door running after the thief whilst pulling up his trousers! When he told me, I just laughed and said "Welcome to Gloucester!"
There are some good bits but it's cheap there for a reason, you're better moving to Hucclecote, Quedgeley or maybe Tuffley if you want to be close to the centre. I always get mixed up between Abbeymead and Abbeydale... one is apparently rougher than the other...0 -
NoGloucester is rough, everyone in the SW knows it.0

I live in Gloucestershire, but wouldn't want to lve in the City of Gloucester. Although it is improving, A lot of it needs knocking down and rebuilding. Gloucester is a city with a lot of History but much of it was torn down after the war.
I would look in one of the smaller towns, although you may not get much for £100k. We live in Newent, but houses here are quite pricey. You could also look at Tewkesbury and Stroud. Cirencester is nice but very pricey. Nailsworth is also worth a look as is Ross on Wye in Herefordshire.
Personally we like Tewkesbury, especialy as it has a lot of preseved history, and is very well situated in terms of transport links. But you have to be very careful with what flooded and what didn't back in 2007. Some of the properties no the river bank didn't flood, where as some further away did flood.
Cheltenham is a nice town, but has some very rough areas (worse than Gloucesters), and you wouldn't pick up a property in a nice area with your budget.0 -
I currently live in Cheltenham, but I've lived in Gloucester before and I would echo what most people have said... It's not a nice place to live, apart from a few areas such as Barnwood, Abbeydale and Longlevens I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful, and the villages down by the river aren't particularly expensive... Cheltenham is excellent but the house prices aren't really comparable0 -

i would also stay out of gloucester itself, there are lots of villages/towns in the surrounding areas and tbh,its pretty easy getting to and from gloucester  i would stay clear of the barrat development in stroud though....:o0 -

Not unless you want to live in Hesters Way anyway. The one thing I have noticed in Gloucestershire in general over the past 3 years, and especially since we bought in March, is that asking and sales prices are going back up.It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -
NoAll you need to know about Gloucester is that Fred & Rose West lived there.0
