Okay, I'm going to join in on the washing memories - my mum had a toploader thing with a mangle on. Not an automatic, obviously, you filled it with a hose and emptied it the same way. Fished the clothes out with massive chopstick type things and fed them through the mangle, then rinsed them by hand. Weird.
And as for heating - we had heating in the living room. When they realised I was serious about my O levels and needed to study somewhere else away from the tv, they bought me a convector heater, that I could cart about with me. And that was that! There was no other heating in the house till long after I'd left home.
