Morning
DS has just left to go back to Swansea - real flying visit home but he did cook dinner last night which was great!
We only bought a new settee etc 5 years ago - we had had ours second hand when we got married in 1985 and last year for the first time ever we had a new carpet !
re the swimming - I could go back now but I'm actually scared in case my eyes start burning again - it was so painful last time I'm really frightened about it happening again. I need to get some good goggles (which I hate wearing) and see if that helps. Half term next week though and we are going to Derbyshire so walking not swimming is inorder then!
Have a good day0 -
I am sorry to read that you have been put off swimming for a bit.....but a week's walking sounds good. I hope the weather is better than was yesterday!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. DD will have an amazing time in China - its certainly an eye opener! They eat a lot of dog this time of year - they even have the heads on display so that you can see which type of dog you are eating (not sure how much difference that makes to the flavour though!) Still, different cultures and all that!
Do any cultures eat mice? Just caught our fifth one this week, they are running riot in the garage, seems a shame to waste them.
Must get over to old style board and see if there is anything flavoursome that can be done with them. (Only joking).I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -

apart from the fact they are tiny it does always make me wonder.... when you think about it why is it ok to eat some animals but others make us go . I'm not a veggie BTW but felt quite squeamish when HFW was cooking squirrels recently!Mortgage OP 2025 £6250/7000Mortgage OP 2024 £7700/7000

Ah yes, the hose that went into the sink - I remember now! And we also had a wooden pole, bizarrely called a "copper stick" to fish the washing out of the boiling hot water!
I think it was called that because they used to use a "copper" to boil up the water and wash the clothes in. I once lived in a cottage built in 1805 which had one in the basement. It was a large copper bowl with a plug to let the water out and an enclosed stone and mortar hearth under to light the fire with chimney attached for the smoke. It was defunct by then or I'd have tried it out for the historical experience! All water would have to be carried to it and poured in before heating and then siphoned out after.
My mum had a "modern" copper in the 50s which was wheeled out on wash days and it took her all day to do the washing and clear up. And she used to send sheets and other large items to the laundry. She got her first automatic in 1960 and it was still going strong 25 years later.
I too had a hand me down sofa which had layers of loose covers in nylon and crimpelene. Once I'd removed these I realized I had a beaut! probably victorian. Once I could afford it I had it recovered and I still love it.CCs @0% £24k Dec 05 £19,621.41 Au £13400 S 12600 Oct £11,981 £9481 £7500 Nov £7250 D £7100 Jan 6950 F £5800 Mar£5400 May £4830 June £4660 July £4460 Aug £3200, S £900, £0 18/9/07 DFW Nerd 0420 -

Oh yes, that was disgusting, and what about the episode when they de-snotted the slugs, then cooked them in a tomato sauce and ate them.....
