    Hi Hypno,

Just popped in to say you are definitely doing the right thing with your daughter. I was allowed to choose the subject I wanted at AS and A level and did media, english and sociology. Really enjoyed my time at college and went on to Uni etc. My Mum on the other hand has told me that she did English, French and German when she was the equivalent age. She ended up quitting 6th form as she hated it and then never managed to quite get the jobs she deserves, even though she is a very clever lady. Enjoying what you do is very important.

    Anyway have a good day!

I feel exactly the same about my DDs' A levels - they have to do what they want. But I also worry that they are narrowing their options. Oh well, nothing we can do except encourage them to be confident and capable young people and hope they will stand out from the crowd when it comes to finding jobs.

  • Hi Hypno - I agree with what you say about letting the kids do what they enjoy and are good at for GCSE's and A Level - my DS has just started his A Levels and is doing 3 sciences and musical theatre! and my DD1 has choosen history, Dance, Acting and PE for her GCSE, and is looking at doing Chemisty,
Psychology,Philosophy and Dance for A levels! Not sure what either of them are thinking of doing in the future but they are subjects they anjoy and teachers have said they are good at.

Despite gracing the scratchcard sites with my presence at this time of the morning, they only decided to give me 10p in return..hmmph.......:p

But online banking showed that my £75 refund for my glasses has cleared, so I have transferred £50 to the 0% and put £25 in Egg savings. That's another square coloured in, and the 0% balance now stands at £3428.....edging slowly in the right direction. Nothing else to report - payday on Friday.......can't come soon enough :o

Right, really must get a move on!

How very dare they only give you 10p:eek:

My payday friday too and half term...i can't wait.:D

I ended up going against the advice of my school and did English, Maths, French, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Higher (and Chemistry at 6th year studies). Apparently it was too restrictive a choice (= Science heavy) and I was rubbish at French (but enjoyed it so wanted to continue and there nothing much else I could chose to fit in my timetable that I liked). Just as well I'm a scientist (albeit a very lowly one) now! :rotfl: I wish I'd done some stats - I blooming struggle with stats all too regularly...

The only thing I regret not doing was Art but it clashed timetable-wise with Biology and Chemistry so was a no go. I'll just have to be happy with being a Scientist who enjoys making silver jewellery as a hobby instead!

    slacker :rotfl:

Thanks for all the positive input re exam choices - very reassuring, so thank you very much.

Home from skiing - it seems a long day, althoughit is still only about half past six  A good day, most enjoyable even as a tired mum who is tired at all the running around, so it must have been a very good day for those who have more enthusiasm!

Pizza is cooking for tea, and then X factor will beckon - mindless Saturday night TV is just what I need!

Hope you have all had a good day - DS and I kept spends low, so we did alright. OH is working, and DD has been to work as well, so not a bad day all round.

Hi Hypno and all..I agree letting them make their own mind up as at least that way they will thrive as they will be enjoying their study.
I sometimes wish I had gone to uni instead of having kids early but on the other hand now they are grown up I have lots of years(hopefully) to do whatever I want to do..once the debt has gone!!

I never went to uni........I never even finished sixth form because I was offered a job that was too good to turn down, that started in the February.

However, the determined stubborn so and so in me, with the support of my college friends who copied their notes for me, meant that I caught up on college notes on the train on the way into and out of work, took a fortnight's annual leave in May/June, and took my exams :D (long before internet, virtual learning etc)

And of course, since then I have become uber qualified in my chosen line of work.

I am, if you didn't already guess, of the opinion that you can do anything if you put your mind to it........
