Great idea I must confess that I usually only switch the t.v. on at 6.00 to watch the news and then turn off again until a programme comes on that I specifically want to watch. I was brought up without t.v. and probably listen to the wireless a lot more than a lot of people .Mine is permanatly tuned to Radio four as there are so many interesting programmes to listen to whilst I am cooking or washing up ,or in the afternoon when I am knitting.I wrote an essay a couple of years ago for college about what a companion the wireless is to folk on their own, as it is a voice in a quiet house.Extremely portable as a t.v. is not.I rarely listen to the music stations as I can't stand the drivel of non-stop chatter that interupts music.I have CDs that I like to listen to or Classic FM on the one in my car if I'm driving. T.v. has its place in my life but not to the extent of other things. I do like to watch History programmes but as I'm studying History at Uni its hardly suprising But I also read, bake talk to friends visit and shop and with my craft class and uni classes and my grandchildren I often run out of time.At my age time is very precious and wasting it is akin to wasting food. But I can see the point you are making .So today my T.V. will go on for the news at 6.00 as usual then off again as I have a lot of reading to catch up on I do like to watch a film at times but reality shows I find just boring and most soaps I could write better rubbish myself .0

I have also just completed a beginners course in makaton it is great that although your son can speak you are encouraging him to learn Makaton it means children like my son would be able to communicate with chidren who dont have the difficulties he does
I have just cut DD's computer time as she was spending more and more time on her laptop and it had got to the stage that she was spending 99% of her time on the computer so have cut it to an hour and a half a day!!! and have kept to it for the last week the school hoolidays are going to be hard as I will constantly be thinking of things for her to do to keep her of it !! That reminded me of our son when he was younger. He used to get grumpy when he'd been on the computer too long. We had to limit him to an hour and a half a day too.0 -

To be honest, I can't find much on TV to inspire me either. I never watch soaps and don't understand why anyone would want to, they're so depressing and the people are so horrible to one another - never a kind word between them. Game shows and reality shows YUK! The odd film or British drama grips me occasionally, and a few history programmes. I automatically put the news channel on most days. I think that'll have to go - the reporters seem to be out to cause dissent nowadays for the fun of it:mad:0 -
I'm afraid our TV time is confined to specific programmes we want to see - Fringe, Sanctuary, Flash Forward, and Stargate Universe, and we'll watch Going Postal, which is on Sunday and Monday. But that's it. Also, we tape them and watch later when 1) it's convenient to us, and 2) we can fast-forward through all the adverts.
BUT I have to say, I love the poem!:DIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I thought this thread was a lovely idea when I read Budgeteer first post and poem, but I feel disappointed that it's going to be merged into another thread.
As the technology thread seems to cover everything from computers to tumble dryers it isn't going to be the focused challenge it started out to be and it's going to be a shame if it gets lost in the mix. 0 -

I thought it would be a good challenge too
Maybe we'll get a reprieve?
I watched half an hour this morning of newsy stuff. I'm going to try to switch off now until tomorrow. Going to limit myself to a short time on computer too. I will be swapping my usual hour-ish of TV and two hours-ish of computer:rotfl: to finish my tea cosy and read through my patterns to find some more Xmas gifts to make a start on.
It's fun when you share a challenge with others - thank you:A0 -

Hi
A reprieve suggests to me that us merging a thread is a punishment - which it certainly is not.:(
The challenge and poem are lovely and great ideas:A. Us merging it with a thread does not change that fact and does not stop the challenge from continuing.:)
Please try to understand if we left every single thread started to "be", there would be so many threads about the same issue, that it would literally be impossible to find one defineable thread about anything. And so we merge similar threads, to keep some sort of order for current and future users.
please also try to understand Board Guides have been asked to keep similar threads together as there simply isn't the space for lots of daily challenges, or individual threads for every single thing. We are following the guidelines we have been given.
And please do not hesitate to contact abuse if you have any issue with anything i have said, or how Old Style is organised.
Hi. Martin has asked me to tell you I'm the Board Guide on the Moneysaving Old Style board. I'm a volunteer to help the board(s) run smoothly, and I can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an abusive or illegal post then please report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com (it's not part of my role to deal with abuse). Any views are mine and not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.com.
Many thanks

Errmmm [shuffles feet and looks nervous]
I use technology for practically everything - DW, WM, TD (no drying space and serious mould problem stops drying on airers)...
but I draw all my formulae and graphs out by hand and then scan them in for submission to Uni. It's quicker and easier than trying to work out how to do it by computer. And I like doing it. I plan my work with an A3 flip pad and brightly coloured marker pens too.
Does that count?I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I would genuinely love to be able to cut down the amount of time I spend online (thank gosh says everyone in here:rotfl:). And "watching" tv. When i say watching, it's on in the background but usually on mute:eek: Not so :money::o
I am considering one of those plug thingmymabobs to see how much leccy stuff uses (and to shame me into turning the tele off inbetween stuff i pretend to watch)A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Tomorrow is housework day!!! Well thats what I call it the girls will be doing their room and then they help me to do the things I have misssed of my flylady list during the week so that way it all gets done!
DS usually ends up watching tv so not sure how I am going to distract him tomorrow but will try for an hour to sit with him and build trains or maybe do some baking or gardening will all depend how quick we get everything else done though sometimes he will come and help with the polishing! I did spend some time today writing sentances to play a makaton game tomorrow after tea so that will have the girls laughing and us all guessing!!
What has everyone else planned?:jmember of the thrifty gifty 2011 :j0
