Choosing OS over Technology

I was thinking about all the technology we have at our hands today, but there are still lots of OS things that technology just can't match. My three are :

Washing dishes while looking at birds on the feeders (yes, I have a dishwasher)

Hand kneading bread (yes I have a breadmaker)

Handknitting my own jumpers / jackets - don't have a knitting machine, just need someone to sew them together for me

Just wondered whether others out there have the technology, but still do some things the OS way

I like walking down to the shops, when I could easily sit at the computer and have the shopping delivered.

I have a food processor as well as a hand mixer, but prefer to make cobbler, crumble, and cake mixes by hand/spoon.

(I love my dishwasher - it gives me more time for cooking from scratch :o)
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
  • I have a food-processor but I still prefer to chop all my veg by hand even for large pans of soup etc. The food-processor tends to make it all a bit "uniform" for me and can easily over-chop some of the softer veg making it mushy..

Like the OP, I prefer to wash my dishes in the sink watching the birds out of the window.

I don't have a freezer, microwave or dishwasher (love my breadmaker though! :D).

I too wash dishes, I have never wanted a dish washer.

I sometimes wash a delicate item of clothing by hand as it is not worth putting the machine on for one thing.

I like to sew tapestry as a hobby although I could buy a factory mass produced item.

I read books although I could watch tv instead.

My family prefer my home cooking to packet/frozen tv dinners
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

    Interesting thread

We are eco warriors in our spare time. so we try to be as low tech as possible.

    1. HG veg and foraged fruit, nuts, greens - and hopefully mushrooms soon
    2. Breadmaking - OH is brilliant at knocking the daylights out of dough -
best bread maker ever - no need for a machine
    3. Hanging washing out to dry - we got rid of our dryer years ago
    4. Washing dishes by hand - we dont own a dishwasher
    5. Harvesting rain water and using grey water for non edible plants - no
    sprinkler system or hose required.

Thing is - we used to have all manner of technology, but we prefer to do it ourselves - we try to keep our carbon footprint down - and to be honest, i prefer the smell of washing off the line, and the taste of HG food.

I like walking to the shops too (will usually only go in the van if OH is getting it, otherwise I get my bags and wander over)

Love to make bread and cakes by hand (useful with my food intolerances) and it comes out pretty well.

I have a tumble dryer and dishwasher but have never used them (they came with my rented flat). I like washing dishes by hand, and drying laundry on my balcony.

I like using my local library rather being able to buy any book from a giant faceless shop.

I like walking to work rather than driving (but driving is sometimes a necessity)

However I do like my microwave. I can easily defrost rolls etc, cook frozen veg without having to boil kettle and use hob.

And I love that the internet allows me to find out where my monthly shop is cheapest so I can go to the cheapest supermarket and save me money :)

In this recession, instead of depression, and telly that takes up the day
Let's turn off the blighter and make our days brighter with OS endeavours and play!
With past-times to choose, we've nothing to lose, but lethargy, boredom and noise,
for crafting and baking and thrifty home-making can cheer up us girls - and the boys.
Growing our own with ne'er a moan, or fun with the board games of old
Our kids get the pleasure of sharing our leisure, and might even do as they're told!
So starting today, if you'd like to play, just switch off the TV and tell,
your Old Style chums, how you got off your bums - and maybe saved money as well.

I hope my silly poem isn't too awful :rotfl:but the challenge is serious. Maybe we can save money, be creative, share our children's growing up more and make memories with them that they can look back on. If you'd like to join in, please add your experiences every day of swapping TV time (or computer games time) for pretty much anything else, especially OS. NOTE As has been pointed out to me, I have been a little unclear. This thread is about our individual challenges to change our TV watching habits in order to do other things such as OS, family time etc, rather than more general OS daily camaraderie

We already have the OS Daily thread, where OSers share the ups and downs of their OS lives :) You'll be made more than welcome :j

I'll merge this thread to that one later.
