When you feel the urge to spend, turn it into an urge to find another saving (but please don't buy something on discount that you don't need - that's not saving).

I think an addictive personality is always vulnerable mine was gambling but now ive packed in -and i never understood why shopoholics blew their money the way they did for example-ive thought of other ways to run up debt!
I think we all need help with the problem more than the symptoms.

I would never consider myself addicted to debt but definitely to SPENDING :D.

Now like so many here i am becoming addicted to being money savvy, that is not to say i do not want to spend still but now if i do it is for the best price, only if needed or with vouchers etc.

MSE is addictive and i know even when i finally break out of debt i will still come on here (if its still around then:rolleyes: ).

    Good luck on your mission.

I hope this does sound to rude as it is not meant to be.

But spending money on stuff that you don't need or want runs deeper than just spending the money.

I am not saying you are unhappy or bored. But maybe there are things that are not right in your life somewhere.

I once read a article where these woman would go out with friends and have a huge spending sprees spending hundreds on fancy clothes, shoes and bags. And then the next day they would take it all back. As they knew they could not afford it and felt guilty.

Maybe you need to find a hobby or something that you can do that costs very little which you could devote your time to rather than spending.

I know I don't have the money as I am not working at the moment. Even though I have access to a lot of credit on my credit cards I will not run up debts to buy stuff. We have what we can afford. If we can't afford it we don't have it. I know that sounds very simple and easy for me to say. But it can be done.

As soon as you get a catalogues through the door then chuck it in the bin. You sort of had a light bulb moment. But it looks like it dimming a little bit at the moment.

Agree with lynzpower do a SOA. We can look and poke and nit pick and see where you could cut down any more.

It is never easy being in debt and slog is always the hardest. But you will get there.

    All the best.

    Yours

I agree with the other posters that I used to be addicted to spending, mostly on items that made me feel better, but now I'm addicted to being a debt free wannabe and I get my kicks from that. Things like seeing the debts go down (on a graph), and arranging cc payments etc as soon as I get my wages.

Yeah i'm addicted to spending too, it proberbly is a deep rooted thing but i'm not sure what it is that makes me spend.
Maybe its because growing up we didnt have much, mum was on income support for 17 years!
Perhaps my spending is because of that?
I am very determined to get down my debt though, because its so horrible knowing that you owe so much money and its just not worth it.
I am still struggling to fight the temptation to spend.
