Cheapest Place To Buy Wireless Broadband Router?

  • Relieved I'm not the only one flailing around in the dark ;D

It's not very difficult. I was confused to begin with. If i tell you about my setup it might help. My broadband connection (not cable) is downstairs in the house. I bought a wireless Netgear ADSL router (DG834G). This is connected to a desk top downstairs, with a Netgear PCI adapter (FA311) which is like a card... which you have to open the PC up and fit yourself, unless it already comes with one. Once this is up and running and you have an internet connection, i put a Netgear wireless card (WG511) in my laptop. I can move all round the house with the laptop with a very good signal. My next step is to buy a wireless card for my desk top and move that upstairs out of the way.
  • All the information you require on wireless networking can be found here http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

Top forum for broadband issues and some very helpful members - almost as helpful as mse ;D
  • I'll explain my setup too in case it helps.

I bought a corega wireless adsl modem router (an all in 1 box that does everything I need regarding wireless and broadband). It is plugged into a phone socket (in my office - though that is unimportant) both my laptops have wireless capability - 1 was wireless when I bought it, the other needed a wireless card which I bought from ebay.

both laptops can now connect to the internet from anywhere in the house/garden.

I secured it by following the manual - it is quite easy really.
    To infinity and beyond!
  • Just to clarify a point, I'm on NTL and my cable was split by the engineer when installed in my house. One goes into the set top box for cable TV. The other goes straight into an Actiontec wireless router. No Ethernet connection needed. I then used a USB receiver which came as part of the Actiontec bundle for my desktop and a wireless PC card for my laptop. Very easy to install and works a treat. Although only 11mbps I've had no problems with signal strength or data transfer.
...and then the window licker said to me...

    knuckledragger

I too am on NTL - not a bad service by all accounts (and will be better when the speed is increased later this month for nothing ::)). However, I am not sure how you could have the cable split before the set-top box then straight into a wireless router - wouldn't it have to either go through the set-top box (as the modem) or through a modem before going into the wireless router (unless, of course, yours is top notch combined).

also knuckledragger what connection does the actiontec have then, I'm surprised they have removed ethernet connections in favour of some NTL specific port?

Make sure the router has the 'GNAT' feature... it acts like a firewall...

    Hope that helps.

Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself. :)

  • Right, fresh up from my hands and knees at the back of the telly, I forgot about the cable modem. Sorry. :-[
The cable comes into the house, gets split, one into the set top box and the other into the cable modem. This goes straight into the Actiontec router. Bobs your uncle etc...
