Hello C_Ronaldo

I'll move your thread to the 'Greenfingered' board, where the gardening experts will help you.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Regards

• alanobrien, thanks for the link. I have just started composting and have found myself questioning everything I'm about to chuck in.

In that case you may find the fact sheets here useful

• I was giving my compost a forking over this morning when I noticed a few slugs in my compost bin. Is that good?

As far as I'm concerned it is. They're turning stuff into slug manure :)

There's all sorts of miniature wild life in my compost bin. I leave them be. Part of the natural process as far as I can see.
Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Any views are mine and are not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.

I get a lot of woodlice in mine. I also put worms in when I find them
• Bah! I've just checked my compost bin and all is not well.
We set it up in April 2007, we've a small, strangely shaped garden so we put it behind the garage, it probably gets an hour or so of sun a day so not perfect but I didn't think it was awful. We put it on paving stones covered in plastic sheeting and put a layer of old compost, manure, leaf mould and some wormy things at the bottom to get it started and we've been merrily slinging in mainly kitchen waste and some garden waste ever since. Went to give it a stir this morning and checked the bottom of the heap and you can clearly make out green leaves and potato peelings etc fully formed near the bottom, it is quite wet even though we've been mixing in lots of "brown" waste. I know miracles aren't going to happen over winter as it's not warm enough and we knew due to the situation of the bin that things would be a bit slower, but does anyone have any idea where we are going wrong on this? Hubby had promised to pee on it when the weather perks up but other than that we're stumped.

Thanks in advance.
