Can I ask...do any of you get abuse shouted at you when out running, or is it just me??

To be fair, I do live in an area where exercise is lifting a bottle of buckie, but you would think I was out for a jog/run naked the amount of stuff I get shouted at me!! The most common is run forrest, or just horns being peeped. The lighter nights are the worst when you get young kids trying to run with me - they do give up after 2 mins!!

Whenever I go out with the running club and we run on the beach at Whitley Bay we get allsorts of abuse shouted at us! When I run on my own I have the ipod in and have invested in some decent headphones that actually stay in so I tend not to hear them anyways!
Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.

    No, never have done yet.

I do, however, spend about 90% of the time when I'm running thinking up comebacks. Every time I go past a bunch of kids I'm thinking to myself "OMGz! What if they say something! What will I do".

Now it's well thought through, my reasoned response will go something like this.

"I am running already, although my name is not Forrest. I take it, from your attempt at derision, you find my efforts so trivial as to be laughable. With that in mind, I kindly invite your FAT A$$ to accompany me on the remainder of my "trivial" journey. It's just down the road, honest. Just another 6 miles. Oh, what's the matter, you too scared? you too lazy? you just TOO BLOODY STUPID TO KEEP YOUR BIG FLAPPY MOUTH SHUT YOU IGNORANT LITTLE..."

Of course, by the time I'm done thinking that, I'm running about 150% faster than I was previously and have a look like thunder on my face - and it's in that fashion that every run I do turns into a mini-fartlek session :)

Seriously, though, being a 15stone 6'2" lad probably helps and I *hate* being mocked (probably childhood issues) so I avoid other people like the plague, just in case.

If its any comfort I'm just reading Charlie Spedding's book (Olympic Marathon bronze medallist from Gateshead) and he mentions some of the comments that he used to get when out training, such as 'You've missed it (the bus)'. So it happens no matter what level.

However, I wouldnt say that theres much abuse - just daft unintelligible grunts every now and again launched from some car/van window. I do particularly enjoy it when they subsequently get caught up in traffic/lights etc and I get to ask them if I can help them with something!:D

Funnily enough, you get very little comment at all in London - probably because runners are everywhere, all the time.

I thought if someone was running in London they'd just stolen something?

Everyone's probably busy looking the other way :)

    Mon - rest day
    Tues - rest day
    Weds - 6.26 miles in 53:38 8:34 mins/mile

Okay so that was supposed to be slow and long...it was neither but it felt slow, the chest is better but I didnt want to push it as I still have a nice little cough ;)

Oh and before Rich says the extra distance is because Albert Bridge is partially closed so I had to do a little detour on both out and back (run around some roadworks at both ends)...

Julie - I have had some funny incidents actually - I think women get it more than men ;), I've had a fat chubby kid job alongside me in Hyde Park so I made him run up the big hill with me - nearly gave him a heart attack :p, I also had a funny one recently when the same van kept beeping me and Rich - couldnt work out if he knew them or something...anyway that and my being chased by an idiot on a bike incident yeah I do get a bit of trouble but I tend to think of it as part of living in central London to be honest - try to brush it off - they are just jealous! The amount of people who would actually do you any harm in so tiny even in the city. Most people are all mouth and no trousers ;)

Idio - well at least your consistent ;)
  • You added 0.02 on for roadworks?

Wow, you are getting keen on the accuracy!;)
