Presents for toddler from new baby

Hi!

Baby #2 coming along end of June. First will be 2.5 yrs, and very interested in her new baby sister arriving!

I want to get her something from her baby sister when baby is born. Nothing too fancy but something she will like. Ideas currently based on her ultimate passions (ah the life of a 2 year old!) are nighties (yes nighties LOL), some kind of shoes (ANY kind of shoes would make her day!) and hair clips - none of which are too pricey if you look in the right places so not too bad. Anyone else any ideas to share?

Also, we know visitors will be buying presents for baby - apart from politely mentioning a small gift for #1 might be very welcome (bit cheeky though isn't it?!), is there any way round this? Obviously it could be a sore point when #1 realises none of the prezzies are for her...

All ideas welcomed!

The new baby could buy her a baby of her own. So you could buy a baby in a nightie with loads of hair clips for it and things like a bath, cot and clothes for it.

I found that when visitors arrive laden with gifts for new baby a good plan was for either mum or dad would ignore everyone else and engage the older siblings in a game or a plate of biscuits! Just until the inital oohs and ahhs have passed and the guests remember that there are other little ones in the house!

In my experience most of the presents that baby gets are clothes or memento type gifts that a toddler wouldn't be that impressed with anyway. Why don't you ask her if she would like to open the gift on behalf of the baby - clever big sister etc. They just love to rip open pressies and the contents probably wouldn't have her green eyed anyhow.

Close family will undoubtedly be sensitive to this and give your daughter something too. As you've already suggested, I do think it would be very cheeky to actually suggest this to others though!

    Good luck with everything.

You may be worrying about nothing though. When I had number 2, five years ago with a 13 month age gap between the two, most people turned up with a small gift for both children. I think it is now pretty much the done thing to buy for all the small children in the house in those circumstances. If you're not too hung up on sweets, you could perhaps have a bag of fun-size things in, so that if someone does leave her out, you could immediately give her a small bar of her favourite sweet and she almost certainly won't even notice that she hasn't got a pressie from the visitor.

Also make the most of them now while they cant squabble. Mine are aged 11 and 9 with a 2 and 3 month age gap and have been at each others throats for about the last 6 years

    I've been Money Tipped!
My no 2 is due at next month too. We're going to steal one of the Festive fivers ideas and fill a very large box with balloons for him to open...he's 21 months so this will excite him no end, plus he'll have lots of balloons to keep on playing with when people come and visit us.

I've always gone to other peoples houses with a pressy for new baby and older baby (+ chocs and biccies for mum and a condom for dad;) ), so you may be surprised what people turn up with, even when unasked.

Weve just had our third, the gifts for the "big Sisters" were small cuddly toys, which baby sister had chosen to keep them company at night (we found when we had dd2, that dd1 started to "visit" us at night again, and dd2 has also tried since dd3 has arrived lol). So now they just snuggle with their cuddly (dd1 has a cat, dd2 has a monkey).

Also, as for gifts, personally I discourage people from buying for the other children as I dont want them to expect presents at other times, but we got round it by getting them to open the gift and describe them to dd3. They really enjoyed playing this game (they are 5 and 3).

Having a new sibling is quite a big deal for them tho, dd2 had day of being very quiet, but soon perked up once she was told that she too would always be my baby!

Good luck with your pending new arrival, ours is 6 weeks old now!!

    Luv Ali

Then when he bursts one he will wake the baby up ;)
