We had a nasty neighbour that seemed to think of hiimself as the neighbourhood police. He moaned at my hubby one hot summer's day because our two kids and two from over the road were having fun throwing water over each other and having fun. They were doing nothing wrong and not causing a commotion other than laughing. These people will moan at anything. One day my two, who were aroung 8 years old were feeding our guinea pigs and talking (I was sitting by the window so I know what they were doing) and he shouted over the fence "Shut up you little ble*d*rs". My husband had to have words with him and said that we don't use swear words like that in front of our children. Im so glad he isn't there now.

I feel for you and hope this can be sorted because I know just how stressful nasty neighbours can be.

Oh Bargain Betty this brings back memories, I'll try to give you an indication of how this feels....

Our neighbours had a dog that when it was let out of their back door for a wee would bark, it would bark 5 or 6 times and that would happen at any time between 10pm and 2am - whatever time they chose to go to bed, it was an absolute nightmare. The stress of going to bed night after night knowing that I was going to get woken up at a time of their choosing was awful. The houses were configured with the main bedrooms at the back we were right over the gardens.

The point about a barking dog at night/in the morning is that it doesn't matter how long the blooming thing barks for, once it's woken you up then that's it, you're awake. We couldn't sleep with the windows open in the summer and the dog woke me up even when I used earplugs.

They never once made an effort to keep the dog quiet, they just opened the door and let it go.

I did speak to them about it after they had been in the house for a couple of months (I'd left it until then as she was pregnant and I hoped it might improve after the babe was born but with no luck) and they said that they tried to stop her (not true, we'd have heard) and she didn't bark for long (see above about duration!).

What amazed me was that supposedly intelligent people aren't concious of the fact that a dog barking at an unsocial hours in an area with neighbours is going to cause a nuisance!

..and yes, I am a dog owner, and no my dog doesn't bark in the garden

You sound like you do want to solve this so I'd take the tips given about bringing dog in when it barks and try to improve the situation.
