Thanks for all your replies, its helpful to know we're not the only ones in this situation, I'm a natural worrier and my dogs mean the world to me so I'm probably blowing it out of proportion a bit, I'm more angry and upset that someone in the area we have lived in for a number of years felt they couldn't talk to us about the problem first or even pop a note through the letter box.
We have become completely paranoid now about any noise the dogs make, they are very well trained and only seem to bark out of excitment e.g when my partners car pulls up on the drive they run out to greet him or when they are let out for the morning wee's, I'm really feeling like we're not letting them be thereselves anymore through the worry of upsetting someone!0 -
Jem......... I completely know how your feeling, we do suspect the person who complained is the grumpy old so and so who's garden backs onto ours. He's well known in the area for shouting at children playing outside in the summertime and moaning about the noise from parties and bbq's, a few of the neighbours have even suggested its probably him!0

Jem, you shouldn't be getting rid of your dog if it's as good as you say. There are ways to stop it barking but it doesn't seem that bad anyway. If you love the dog and the dog has a happy life with you you have to keep it and tell this bloke to get a life!!!All opinions are my own and in no way contain official advice or guidelines.0

we have a garden the size of a field,he plays great with our other dog and gets 3 walks a day, lots of treats and toys. He hasnt got a barking problem in my eyes, only about 10 single barks a day but he has got a squeeky bark. Its this man thats just being awkward as there are lots of dogs on the street with barking problems but our little fella hasnt. This man made my other neighbours move because he complained about them playing music ( never bothered us because it was not loud) so i think he is just a nasty person. Ten single barks a day is not noisy and the poor little thing has to bark an odd time. jem
I don't understand why you feel he has to go then, although in your 'barking' thread you said the barking was quite bad and that there is no let up and he won't stop.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
Hi i meant its high pitched but not constantly, im tired, stressed and have to put him in every time it happens. If he hears another dog barking he will then. I got some rest yesterday because this guy was working and i could let the dog bark and today i spoke with his next door neighbour who said he complains about every dog and to take no notice of him. Its kind of the case when someone complains it makes you feel like there is a problem and your in the wrong but all my other neighbours now have said our dog isnt noisy, i think maybe its because he is sqeaky. Im going to say something if this man shouts again, i know he is a coward and waits until im home alone, he is only in his forties and should get a life as his mum who he lives with adores dogs but he wont let her get one. jem0

Does anyone know the point at which 'normal' dog barking tips over into a problem that the local authority will concern themselves with?0

If it causes arguments i suppose , or disruption to neighbours lives. jem0

There are no acceptable levels for a simple reason. A dog barking loudly all day on a farm in the middle of nowhere is not a nusiance. A dog barking all day in a housing estate is going to cause a nusiance. Its all down to wheter the officer thinks it will cause nusiance or not. The noise will be montoired from the house of the person who complained for this reason. Basically if you think its causing you a nusiance the council has a duty to investigate and see if they think its a nusiance in their expert opnion. If they don't your still able to take private legal action or try some kind of neighbour mediation.0 -

The pitch of the bark is irrelevant. I am confused. (Doesn't take a lot) but is he barking just 10 single barks all day? If that is the case then it doesn't constitute a noise nuisance.
However, above you said you just let him bark because the guy is out. I would be none too happy about a dog that just barked and barked in the neighbourhood. I probably wouldn't complain but I would be a tad irritated by it. I would also be concerned for the dog and the reason for it's barking.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
well 2 days ago he barked alot, so we brought him in all day. yesterday 10 single barks ( counted them) and today he hasnt been bad either. We have a dog 3 doors up that doesnt stop for air an just keeps barking but he never seems to shout about that dog. I never let him get to a stage of bad barking yesterday and i think thats why i am stressed as im watching and waiting for the man to shout. 4 days ago our dog was quiet all evening and gave one single bark ( man shouted) we brought the dog in but its terrible as this weird man just stands in his garden for hours waiting for a bark so he can shout. My hubbys had enough as he already asked him if the dog was annoying him and the guy said no but then he shouts sly, hubbys going to approach him if he shouts again. an old lady with a big barky dog lives next to this man and says he is horrible, shouts at the poor dog always and theres such a look of hate in his eyes, i think if he knows what its like to get shouted at back he will stop moaning. My mum is taking our little boy now and i know our girl will miss him but we will see him daily, im not going to let this guy go with it though and every time he shouts outside im going to tell him to shut up, old ladys terrified of him . jem0
