  • My mother had a complete knee replacement about 8 yrs ago, my father gave up his job to look after her because the recovery period took longer than it should have. To this day my mother is still in pain and is on all sorts of medication. She can get around by herself but eventually the pain is unbearable and she has to sit down. Up until 2 years ago her Disability allowance was stopped so was the allowance my father was getting for looking after her. 4 weeks ago my father had a pacemaker fitted after collapsing one evening. They are currently living off child benefit that they are entitled to, this is their only income. To say they are struggling would be an understatement, they also have a morgage. I help out when I can but now I can't afford to as I need to save for my wedding. Are they entitled to any benefits? My father is 58 and my mother 56.Any help or suggestions would be kindly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Your parents should certainly be entitled to benefit. I would recommend consulting a local advice agency - CAB or a disability group for example. There will be numbers in your local phone book.
Based on those details I would have thought that a claims for ESA and Council Tax benefit would be successful, and perhaps a claim for Carers Allowance by your mother, and that at least one of your parents if not both should try again for DLA.
The question of any debts that your parents may have after struggling on so little money would also be able to be dealt with at an advice agency.
  • Grrrrrrrr! OH may be made reduntant next week:eek: have been on entitledto and it has come back saying he should get £202.50 per week income support/JSA ...... it seems rather a lot of bebfit to me especially as last time he was made redundant he only got £50 per week!! i put in couple, 2children, my wage (5 hrs a week) and mortgage i've double checked it as well does anyone know if this is too higher figure

  • It doesn't seem out of the way if you're including job seekers allowance as well. The entitledto site is usually accurate.

I have a big problem with the official tax credits calculator on the inland revenue site - it seems to return the wrong figures (well under) and unless I am being particularly stupid it could even put you off claiming as it is so far out.

Can someone else run some figures through and see what result you get.

  • Hi don't know whether anyone else has found this out and posted it.
Went to site and used calculater, said I was entitled to Council benefit but when I checked with Council found that I wasn't entitled as I had savings over £16000
  • Hi, 1st time writing on one of these so do forgive my ignorance!
I am currently self employed but I do receive dla both middle rate for care and higher rate for mobility. I am finding it very difficult continuing with my job through my disability but would like to know what benefits I would receive if I were to give it up, not on a very good income now as it is but dont want to end up worse off! Any help would be appreciated

    Hi blondie63uk,

It sounds like you may be eligible for ESA. You will probably be best to start a new thread, as this one tends to be missed.

To start a new thread, if you go to the main Benefits page, there should be a 'New Thread' button at the top of the page x

I just want to say thank you as well ....it has taken over 3 months, but we have been awarded pensions savings credit of just over £7 per week - backdated 3 months from date of claim - plus 2 weeks' cold weather benefit! Now we are just waiting to hear about council tax rebate as well ....but as the information on the form sent back from DWP was - shall we say - muddled (had my OH living in the house we sold last year and stated I'd moved to our new house in 2002!!) we'll wait on that one!

But thanks to the information on this board, we are better off!
