Thanks to MSE and peeps here, based upon the benefits calculator and after a quick chat with my local council, looks like I am eligible for Housing Benefit - a figure of about £30 a week. Hope the application process is fairly painful :-)
  • Just a little note for pensioners who have been awarded Pension Credits:

There are two types of Pension Credit - Guaranteed Pension Credit (PCG) and Savings Pension Credit (PCS)

If you receive PCS only and have over £16k you will not be entitled to Housing and/or Council Tax Benefits.

If you receive PCG you will be entitled to full HB/CTB regardless of the amount of capital you have. The PCG is a passported benefit (similar to Income Support).

Also - if you are a pensioner and you apply for HB/CTB the govt regulations enable councils to treat your application as being made for a period of up to 1yr prior to the date you actually applied (dependant on various conditions)... it's always worth asking them to consider this....

Hope this is of interest to someone!!

    ;)

Looking for info please. A friend (previously on Incab Benefit- higher rate) has recently had both legs amputated. Still in hospital rehab. When he gets out what benefits may he be eligible for? Has no savings, no partner & not a lot to look forward to. Any advice where to start?

    Thank you

  • When your self employed and you are asked how much do you earn, how do you calculate this? is it the money you draw from the business? I dont actually pay myself a wage and havent since working for myself. If I dont pay myself a wage how do i know what to put on the website entled2? so i can see if i can get any tax credit? I literaly pay all my bills through my business as all credit card and loans are from business purchases, I am out of pocket every month, I only have money to spend inbetween money into the bank from sales and before a next bill has to be paid, I cant get out of my 5k overdraft at all. HELP
  • Hi
I have done the benefits check and find that if I was working only 15 hours a week instead of 32 I would be getting over £1000 a year more! Has the world gone made or do you just have to know how to work the system?

I have 3 children and a husband who is newly self employed due to redundancy (virtually no earnings expected in first year). We earn £14,400 a year between us and pay £770 a month in mortgage.

Can I get help with free school meals, dentist, presciptions etc?
    help appreciated:o

I have just been using this calculator and I am bemused, perhaps someone with good knowledge could help me.

I entered all my income details exactly as they are, and was not surprised to find that it had calculated my tax and benefits correctly.

Now I made a single change. I added a pension contribution of 3.5% of my annual income. This increased the amount of tax credits I was entitled to.

Now we come to the tax section, the calculator used my pension details to calculate how much tax I would pay. The amount of tax deducted was radically reduced, presumably because of my pension contributions.

This left me much better off than before.

Is this correct. The more pension contributions you make the richer the more your final net earnings prove, is this really correct?

I'll supply some figures to illustrate...

    Gross income entered: £17000
    Pension: £0

    CTC: £2174.50
    WTC: £0
    TC total: £2174.50

    This gives me

    Tax Credits: £2174.50
    net earned income: £13,380.43
    child benefit: £946.37
    Total £16,501.30

Now we will leave everything exactly the same, except we will include a pension contribution of 3.5%

    Gross income entered: £17000
    Pension: £595

    CTC: £2,393.64
    WTC: £1.01
    TC total: £2,393.64

    This gives me

    Tax Credits: £2,393.64
    net earned income: £13,511.67
    child benefit: £946.37
    Total £16,852.69

This means I have £351.39 more in my pocket and I am also accruing a pension. If you increase the pension contributions it gets more drastic. Can this really be right? Am I doing something wrong?
  • Is there another benefit calculator?? I've tried entitledto, but it dosen't ask for student loan/grant info so I'm not really getting a good estimation.

How accurate is the entitled site? I've just added in my details and got the results - but when I add them into the HMRC benefit checker there is a downfall of £60. I want to start a new job in January and need to know where I stand financially.

sometimes its not accurate, try using it another day or your LA benefit checker, there might be one on their site.
