Well firstly I would hav gotten out of the car and told her to stop trying before that out of worry for my own car.

But I have hit a car in a supermarket before without realising it.
My husband told me and I DID get out and speak to the lady sat in the car, but because the bump was small and I was concetrating on manouvering I did not feel the bump.

Given there is no damage then is there any possibility she might not have realised?

I would advise being a bit proactive in future if you see someone trying to do something near your property that might damage it.
Not even checking deserves a call from the police.

If you think she might not have noticed than I'm afraid I think this is a valuable waste of police time.
Would you want police spending time on this if you really needed them for something else?
  • I was in a carpark once, and the woman parked beside me opened her car door which smacked into my car, and just looked at me. She was literally stood next to my door, and just looked in my window, before hopping in her car and driving off. It all happened so quickly, I hopped out and looked at the mark she'd made as she was still reversing out, and she just took off. I was so annoyed. If she'd looked in and said sorry I wouldn't have been fussed, but she knew I'd watched her do it, and still did a runner. That annoyed me for a while, but I don't think reporting her would have done me much good, probably would have escalated my anger and been stressful. Still can't believe the cheek of some people, though.

Doing that you don't know the situation. The driver quite possibly would have taken offence at you insulting their driving. The OP would have likely gotten a stream of abuse or worse for their trouble.

I don't know for certain but I believe even if there is no damage then it's still an accident and you need to stop! The offence is not the accident itself, I believe that's a civil matter. It's the driving off afterward which is what makes it a criminal issue.

I agree, there is always a trade-off when deciding whether to intervene., but I think I would in this case with a single female inside a vehicle (she is protected). Not perhaps if it was a gang of hoodies. You have to use your discretion.

But look at it the other way.
As a single female was she comfortable appraoching someone she's just hit??
If she was scared though then she should of course have taken the reg and contacted the owner.

I would guess not, but I don't know for sure.

Also how did she know there was no damage? She could have caused damage and she just drove off. If she got out and checked their was no damage that's different. Not even checking deserves a call from the police.

She didn't check. I barely had time to take her reg befor she was gone!!

I'm starting to calm down a bit though!!

When the woman in question turned her car I assumed she was moving off to fin another car parking space and was quite relieved!! But then she decided to have one last go. I didn't have a chance to say anything!!

    No worries.
Just sounded like it had all taken some time from your description.
As someone else said you do have to be careful when intervening.
I tend to be an interventionist even though I'm not large or strong but people have been stabbed and even killed over very minor incidents, so Mark Hewitt is right to coment.
  • Even if there is no damage she has committed a serious offence in failing to stop at the scene of an accident. It's a police matter.

If there is no damage hat offence has she committed?

The OP never said he was injured, no damage, no injury, no reportable accident and therefore nothing to report to the police.

If you don't believe me read the road traffic act.

If she has collided with the OP's car then that is an accident and she needs to stop. Even if it is to agree with the other party that there is no damage and no harm done.

The offence isn't the damage or injury caused, it's the failure to stop.

I love the fact that she thought it might be easier to get in the other way. It is like those people who, when trying to fit in a parking bay, keep maneuvering backwards and forwards and don't change the direction of the wheels but still somehow think they'll fit in/straighten up!
