my internet is capable of receiving live tv. I mistakenly clicked on some live cricket once (I hate cricket) and as soon as I realised it was live, I clicked straight off.
I am asking today, partly because tomorow is when the country goes digital.
thanks for the reply though0 -
Re-read what closed said in post 2.
you only need one if you watch or record live tv broadcasts.0 -

for instance, you don't need one if you only use your telly for DVDs & gaming
from the TVLA site ... 'You must be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.'0 -
We're looking at getting rid of our TV and using our pc for DVDs and on-demand etc, making a saving on both tv license and virgin media! Its strange how the most simple rule can seem "too good to be true" as we're always told that to own and use a tv in any way you need a license, as if it we're a gun or a car! But the rule is as everyone else says, as well as the TVLA!! From what i've found out so far you pretty much dont need one as long as your savvy enough to realise how and why you dont!0

get rid of the licence if you don't need it, but keep your telly, DVDs are so much better viewed on a big screen0 -
I think the trouble would be if you owned a TV then it is a fair assumption that you use it for watching TV. Would it be up to you to prove that you didn't?
I've got no idea on the original question, though. Still don't think it's been answered to my satisfaction. What about if you watch television programmes online as they're being shown on TV? Surely that does fir the wording from TVLA and so you would need a licence.
(But I wouldn't be too worried about having clicked on to cricket accidentally!)0 -

you need a licence to watch programmes as they're being broadcast no matter what receiving device you're using, from the TVLA website ... 'You must be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. It makes no difference what equipment you use - whether it’s a laptop, PC, mobile phone, digital box, DVD recorder or a TV set - you still need a licence.'
so in the instance you mention above about watching programmes on-line as they're being broadcast, yes you would need a licence
I wouldn't worry about the accidental cricket thing either0 -
Thanks for the replies.0

I don't think this has been mentioned but it's worth noting
you don't need a licence to watch iplayer & the like on-line, as you're viewing after the 'live' transmission0
