Glad you have had a good experience mummymx.

My Astra is in at the moment at a LPGA approved place in Hull for converting.

The figures for me stack up longterm and I had been staring at a calculator lots to make sure.

The company have loaned me a Vectra (1.8 Sri i think) and a Frontera (3.2 V6) (Vectra runs out of tax today so it went back).

Astra Sporthatch 1.6 (56), just gone 3 years old and racked up 50,000 miles.

Prins (one of the best) conversion kit fully fitted, extra valve lube and tank in the spare wheel well for £1602.

I now do 100 miles a day (moved for love) so that is 26,000 miles a year to work, rounded up to 30,000 for weekend travel as well.

LPG station round the corner from home 51.9p a litre and 2 stations in Harrogate.

    At 44mpg on petrol @ 103.9p a litre I worked out about £3200 a year on petrol.

LPG doesn't hold as much energy per litre as petrol so a rough estimate is knock 20% off taking it down to about 35mpg. LPG cost comes in at £2000 a year.

Cost per mile on petrol is £0.11 and LPG £0.07

£100 a month saving on fuel, 16 months to pay for itself.

Quite a long term view and I have no plans to change my car.

Hopefully the real world figures will be better and I hope to minimise the 20% reduction in mpg.

You do have additional service costs though at about £120 every 20,000 miles ish. This is recommended but the service manual for my kit states 50,000 mile intervals.

A larger car like the Jeep you have will pay back the money faster as you use more fuel.

I am hoping to get the monthly fuel cost down from £200 to £100 as a foresee working this distance away for quite a long time.

Hopefully will get it back tomorrow

LPG conversions will only be £10 lower tax from 2010, you can change the V5 if you get the car converted. It will be congestion charge exempt as well.
I looked at it for my Zafira, payback was about two years, but that also depends on tax on LPG not going up. You need a conversion certificate for your insurance company, nothing to stop the garage posting a copy on. Make sure you get the original yourself though.
  • While I agree that the thread does have some useful information in it, It appears it was just intended as blatant advertising.

  • Yep the V5 will be changed and the tax the same as a petrol car unless there is another factor like age maybe. Im not aware of a separate tax band

Never heard of being able to lower car tax tbh mainly because lpg cars can still run on petrol.
You declare the conversion to DVLA and you qualify for the Alternative fuel tax bands, you don't save very much ££'s but you do save a little
This was the reasoning behind removing the congestion charge benefit also though Im not sure if the blonde dude has reversed that decision now
The outgoing red dude stopped the change to CC, so LPG cars do still qualify, however, AFAIK the only LPG cars that qualify are those done as a manufacturer option from new and those done on a powershift grant. Not those done on a whim by owners.

    12000 miles @17 mpg is 705 gallons or 3145litres
    costs over the last 7 months 103.9 l (now 111p l)
    LPG 48p per litre
    Petrol costs £3270
LPG costs £1509 @ £0.48 or £1736 including less mpg from LPG
    Roughly saving £1500 so far

Yes OP is possibly a spammer but the message is clear LPG pays ££££ quids in!

You can't be serious! You do know that's illegal don't you? I believe the police check for red diesel as a matter of course on any diesel vehicle stopped, and if you get found out the HMRC will absolutely throw the book at you.

I don't think the OP was spamming, some of you lot do seem a bit harsh on newbies at times tbh. You've obviously scared her off.

That is,of course illegal. I've heard that it's impossible to remove the red dye from the filters so, even if you run it on normal diesel, if you're pulled up you'll get caught.
