BT and Sky contracts - getting them then being told i cant have what i want

Options
Hi

First post.

Hoping for advice.

I just moved house. I had Sky Talk, Sky TV inc. Free broadband.

When I moved Sky said I HAD to have a BT line in to get their service.

So, today, I got a BT line installed for the price of £123

Then my girlfriend phoned up to get the broadband connected.

She was informed that I did NOT live in a area where this could be done for free (due to the telephone exchange) and that I would have to pay an extra £17 per month for Sky Broadband.

The issue here is that I am now, I’m guessing, tied into a 12 month contract with BT for line rental at £12 per month.

I now can’t get any cheap BB deals as most want to sell you line rental as well (e.g. Talk Talk is all in for £17 whereas if I went with BT broadband it would cost £26 inc line).

Is there anything that can be done in my situation? (i.e. not being told about this till it was too late).

Is anyone at fault, is it me who is at fault for not checking?

Anyone got any ideas where I can get cheap broadband from (and, unfortunately although I’m an Orange customer I cant get this broadband).

Many thanks

It would have been prudent to check what services were available at your new exchange first, but you probably had loads of other stuff to sort out.

Anywho, if you go on the samknows website and do an exchange search you will be able to find if their are any LLU service providers, who could offer cheaper broadband.

  • BurnsieUK, BT is offer a free installlation deal so you should have got the line free but signed into an 18month contract - the offer has been extended till 31 December. get the BT rep to look into this for you - you could be due back that £123 money! for the BB check out 02 - there is a deal going for 3 months - good luck!
  • well.

Sky came today to fit the dish.

Turns out, we cant of that either

so we now have a BT line that we really really done need.

On the upside i can get virgin media, which we may end up getting because of the channels it gives (Sky One etc)

We can also pay the BT cancellation fee of £7.50 and get Line rental, Talk time and TV with virgin for cheaper than getting another BT package.

    oh well, lesson learned.

    (now onto Water rates)

    No not just £7.50

If you decide to end your BT contract within the 12 month minimum period, you will incur a single charge of £7.50 for each month left of the minimum period.

Also Sky told you porkies they could have connected a line for you ,their was no need to use BT.

"If you are a new Sky TV customer and subscribe to Sky Talk Line Rental and a Sky Talk calls package and you don't have an existing BT line, we can arrange installation of a new line."

Why can't Sky fit a dish to your property?
