Dropped phone, no insurance

Hey guys,

Here was one of my, 'only way to learn is to make a mistake' moments. Having been on PAYG for a long time I was ready to get a new decent phone on contract. I got an N85 on Orange for £35. Considering I was already paying £35 a month and I never had a problem with my old phone, I decided not to get insurance. Stupid move, I know.

So anyway about 3 months down the line, my phone gets knocked off a chair on to a slate fireplace surround. Smashing the screen and bending the internal board. It went back to Nokia, via Carphone Warehouse who told me it could not be repaired. This all happened about 7 months ago. I just got my old phone and carried on paying the contract, I was still getting decent minutes and texts so it wasn't the end of the world and my fault.

I do however wonder if I've done the right thing. Did/do I have any leg to stand on with the phone company? Or do I have to ride it out??

Thank you

accidental damage won't be covered by any manufacturer warranty, but one thing you didn't do, is check with your home contents insurance.

Many home contents insurance will cover phones, and you would have claimed for an N85, sim free, and paid an excess..

I dunno if it is too late, but it might be worth a phone call..

  • Yea, I forgot to mention I did check my home contents insurance which unfortunately doesn't cover mobiles. I'm mainly asking to an article I read on here recently about consumer rights? I wasn't hopefully, just thought I would ask on the off chance.

    Thank you
  • By your own admission it was your fault so...

    Yes you did.

1 thing did you get a second opinion on the bent board? As I've heard CW are not the best for repairs?

If you were unscrupulous you could have taken out a policy then claimed a couple of weeks later. But that would have been fraud.

Not trying to rub your face in it just advice for next time. Mines insured as an addition to my home contents insurance. £40 a year, £50 excess with far better terms for loss damage unauthorised calls etc. Now I could have paid Vodaphone £8 a month for worse cover - but they do give you a loan phone whilst it's in for repair.

you could take out specific mobile insurance, not sure what age you can register the phone up until, I know I dropped my C905 and was like you didn't have phone insurance.

there are insurances out there that will let you insure your phone on its own, - not sure of the age limit of the phone but you need the receipt to show when you purchased the phone, and if it is over a certain age (6 months I think) there is a waiting time something like a month,

Dipsy you do know that is fraud?
  • Yea, I work against fraud so I'm certainly not going down that ladder haha. Carphone Warehouse sent it to Nokia for me so I'm pretty certain they're correct. They even sent an awful blurry picture of what apparently was the bent board. Thank you for correcting my initial thoughts. Next time, I know, and I really will take out insurance :) Consider it lesson learnt :)

Hi sorry I don't follow what is Fraud?

I was suggesting, albeit, maybe not clearly, that in the future the OP could take out specific phone insurance and that if anyone has had their phone for a while and for financial reasons didn't take out insurance at the time of purchase, they could still take out insurance for the future if they so wished as there were companies out there that will let you insure your phone that is over 6 months old

sorry if I did not make my self clear

I broke my phone and it made me realise that I should insure the other phone that I had should the same thing happen

Have you ever had phone insurance? If not, how many years have you owned a mobile? At the £8/month rate quoted above, you would have saved £96/year or £480 over five years in insurance payments! More than enought to cover the cost of a replacement phone.

Insurance has to be profitable, so it's only worth buying if you are more unfortunate/unlucky/careless than average (ignoring the "peace of mind" that insurance may bring).

Why not insure yourself? Just put £8/month into a jar an hopefully by the time you damage/lose your phone you'll have saved enough for a replacement. If you don't need to "claim", you can spend the cash on whatever you want - unlike real insurance premiums!
