Bargainbird sorry to here of the loss of BIL, he was in my thoughts today when we did a detour to walk around Oradour-sur-Glane realising that we hadn't learnt much from the thugery (sp) of 1944. DH had wanted to see this for a while so took the opportunity while passing. Will share the rest of today with you tomorrow IYKWIM.

Jayward have now loaded messenger onto the netbook so will watch for you being on.

  • Bargainbird Sorry to read that your BIL didn't recover. My thoughts and prayers are with you & your family. What a senseless tragedy.

I couldn't get back onto MSE after I had posted earlier. It kept reading the file was too big. Everything else I went into was fine. SHrek 3 was on the telly anyway. :D After getting a loaf of bread sorted out this morning I hope to do some gardening for the big part of the day. It's long overdue.

    SLeep well. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

    Murphy was an optimist!!!
  • <<[ JackieO it is a beautiful place and lovely countryside. That was a strange coincidence your brother buying a house there hundreds of years later:D.
I don`t know what the north east of Scotland was like back then but I can`t imagine moving from Pau to there....must have been a bit of a shock for them;)[/QUOTE]>.

The ancestors were protestant Hugeneots and were escaping religious prosecution after the Edict of Nantes. They settled all over Britain and as artisans (mine were weavers and jewellers) who put down roots in Brechin in the north east of Scotland. They must have seem outlandish and rather extotic to the local people at the time ,but soon assimilated into their surroundings. Their family name was Bearn which sounded a bit scots to the locals so they seemed to be accepted fairly quicklyMost of the girls retained their french manes and even to the 20th century I was Christened Jacqueline-Elizabet and my daughters are Michelle-Diane &
Theresa- Suzanne..For some strange reason ,probably long forgotten now the French and the Scots seem to get on a lot better than the French and the English. Its a very beautiful part of France and the folk are very welcoming unlike the north where they are more suspicious of new comers. My brother has lived permanatly there since the late 1990s and loves it, he will never come back home to England now he is far too settled in. A lot less stress for him as well he looks ten years younger since going there. Last time I was there we went into Cognac for a stroll and I brought back a huge bag of conkers for my grandsons .They were enourmous twice the size of the english ones and they were laying in drifts on the street.

Donny-gal what a sad silent place Oradour -sur Glane is .A place where even the birds don't sing.Every french school child has to visit this place to make sure they never forget what happened to the villagers there whilst the germans retreated towards the end of the last W.W.
A massacre of innocent men, women and children. The world has got no better since those dreadful days Innocent folk are still being killed for no apparent reason

BargainBird I am so sorry to read your dreadful news about your BiL.
again such a senceless loss of someones life who was loved and cared for by his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you tonight.
I think everyone on this board were praying for a better outcome for him I can't imagine how hard it is for you all.Hopefully the police will have the perpatrator in custody, not that will bring him back but you may get justice for him if nothing else
    God bless you all
