Earphones replacement/refund??

My friend recently (Sunday) bought a pair of Sony earphones for £35 from HMV but after about 2 days of playing music, one side developed some buzzing sound whilst playing music. It's the earphones itself because it was tested on my laptop and other MP3s and still had this buzzing sound.
He wants to exchange them for a new pair of earphones but will HMV give him a new pair as obviously its been used and the packaging is still intact, albeit a little ripped?
I told him it might not be possible since its earphones but he's had other opinions so I just want to ask here if its possible

£35 for earphones is not outrageous and he should certainly take them back and show them the fault.
As for earphones for a £5...........0 -

I had some i pod earphones when I bought my i pod..they lasted about 3 months and then broke the same way all the others did. A fiver is about all they are worth for the amount of time they will last. For £35 you are paying for the brand and the packaging!0 -

If that is what you believe then you stick to your five pound earphones.0 -
And you can pay a damn site more than £35 for earphones.0

A pair of Seinhausers will last you 2+ years for £20.
Forgot to say in the original post that the £35 earphones has a neckband with but I do think £35 is a bit too much but I wouldn't buy as low as £5 ones0 -

I am afraid that is complete bollox. There is a a difference between £5 earphones and £35 earphones that even a cloth-eared bint like you could detect.
The reason that your iPod earphones lasted three months is (a) they are worth a good deal less than £5 and (b) you are a dyspraxic baboon.0 -

I merely stated if you think that earphones cannot be worth more than £5 then good for you. I wouldn't waste a fiver on earphones, I would get a decent pair. Unlike yourself.0 -
