I'm not quite sure where you're going with this, but I had an AV experience once that could be relevant.
During a full scan, AVG crashed hard and rebooted the system. So I scanned again, and exactly the same thing happened, at roughly the same time.
Naturally I became suspicious, and the next thing I tried was a full scan from a malware detector. This also crashed, but it didn't bring the system down, it just froze in one place. I ran it again, and it froze in the same place - same file each time.
The problem was some form of corruption in the file (if I remember rightly,it was actually the name of the file that was the problem, not the contents). I can't remember exactly how I fixed it, but I think I had to first rename the file, then delete it.
Might not be relevant, on the other hand it might be useful to know further down the line. BTW, osd.exe is usually a program that provides an on screen display when you change volume etc. Compaq and HP machines often have it installed as standard, and some mice and keyboards install it as part of their software.
