Is there a specific file it keeps crashing on?

If it crashes at the same point each time, it sounds as though there's a file on your computer that is not playing nice with it.

This looks like the most likely explanation to me.

between avast and avira, avira has slightly better detections, but avast has an e-mail scanner...and I've always found avast more reliable in terms of how it runs & updates :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

That's great guys. Just running scanner again to check it does what it's supposed to if not what should I do. I have seriously cocked up, I should have left AVAST well alone:naughty:boo hoo
  • i have avira, used to have avast when i scanned avast for the last time before removing it it told me no infections scanned with updated avira and there were 1500 infections that were detected! the problem that your encountering with avira (i had the same) may be vista (if you have it) did you install it on an admin account? and installed it under administrators privilages if not then it wouldnt of fully installed and the registry values may not have been set and so may he halting the system, or you could try asking the avira's support team why its crashing on this certain file give them the file name and what program its related to and then they will investigate it to solve the problem, one thing i would do is download ccleaner and install it boot up in safe mode (while laptop booting keep pressing f8) and select start up in safe mode ignore the other options run ccleaner and do a clean up then useing ccleaner go to registry cleaner and run that and keep runing it untill there is not files to clean in the registry or files. you havent seriousy cocked it up so dont worry if your completely stuck and not got any further with avira post back im willing to talk you through it on msn.

I don't have the finances to take the laptop and get a specialist to sort it:confused: So please, please guide me

Dont panic. You removed AVAST and installed AVIRA because the computer was slow. Ive asked you to run combofix for 2 reasons ~
1 - to remove anything nasty it might find
2 - to show us a logfile of whats running (Goes deeper than Hijack)

The logfile will show us what needs doing next

Avira, Avast and AVG all have the plus and minus points. Dont panic about what you have and concentrate on getting the 'actual' problem fixed then you can have whatever av you desire

Id guess that there is still remnants of 'some' av running in the system somewhere which is causing the problem, but until I see a logfile then your flying blind.

  • Download Eusing Reg cleaner and run that.

Then do the scan again and make sure that you don't have any other programs running
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
  • to boot up in safe mod first shut down (if you alwready have it booted up) and start up as soon as you press the on button give it a second or two then hit F8 button till a black screen with options come up use the arrow keys to select safe mode ignore all other options just want safe mode, then hit enter, the screen will show the boot loader processes this is normal, then vista will load to the login screen when logged in everything may look like different and large this again is normal for safe mode your icons will be on the desktop select ccleaner and run a clean up the look for regisrty cleaner when you run this it may ask you do you want to back up te regisrty before you continue i dont normally do this but if you do then it will send a copy of the windows regisrty to the desk top as an icon with blue blocks for you to restore it in the event something goes wrong (it never does as the cleaner looks for dead regisrty's that can affect the system and gets rid of them) after the scan it will ask you to do you want to fix these problems select fix. and repeat the process till it says none found then shut down the laptop as normal start shut down or restart then boot up as normal then run avira should be ok oh and try this too right click on the avira icon and select run as administrator this sometimes helps the program run with all priviladges,
