A job for someone anti-social?

Night stocking in a supermarket or generally just stocking up a supermarket during the daytime? Not much socialising there?
I really enjoy the night fill, I can just zone out and get on my work without anyone bothering me. If I feel like having a chat I can but if I don't I can usually just fill a section away from others.
However, if other supermarkets work anything like the one I'm at everyone starts off on till (as you can learn the basics of that in a day) and then move on from there (yes, believe it or not shelf stacking does actually require some skill!).
Forget filling while the shop is open if you don't like people, there can be a non-stop stream of questions from customers, last week I had three at once and none wanted to wait whilst I dealt with the others. You need to be good with people, supermarket customers can be very demanding.0 -
Hi Katibear,
I sympathize with you.
If money is a problem, have you thought about selling stuff? Ebay is a great way to make money, most of the contact being email rather than having to speak or see anyone. This may take the stress of having to get a paid job so quickly.
It is worth finding another Doctor to go and see (take your partner or a friend with you for morale support, they can also back up your claim if you start to struggle), I was lucky enough to find one that took it seriously and helped me sympathetically. One of which being art therapy, you don't have to be good a drawing or artistic in anyway - but you do end up going to a health centre one or twice a week, dawdling on some paper and then talking about it. This gets you out the house, lets you talk to people who understand and will also help you with the confidence of getting a job that would suit you.
You said that you did some invoice work for your dad, could you do something like that again? How are you talking to people on the phone? I have had a job where I worked in a small office, (10 people max who were all busy designing stuff so didn't really talk much) calling chasing for invoices to be paid and filling bits. This was for four hours a day, four days a week. The money was enough to cover the bills and I was still able to get help with income support.
I wish you luck with your hunt and hope you manage to find someone who will help."Live each day as if it were your last and garden as though you will live forever"

I know this may be off topic, but is there any chance you could have autistic tendencies rather than a social phobia? Have a look on the national autistic society website for more details. The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

Katie,
Did you know you can get a Web Design qualification with the OU and if you're not working you'll get your fees paid.

I can't stand dealing with the public. In my opinion, these days 'the public' are generally a load of unwashed, mouth-breathing, oxygen thieves. I would rather pull my own finger nails off than deal with 'the public'.
The Internet industry is a great thing to get into if you don't like dealing with that 'the public'. I started in a bottom rung job back in '96 as a night-shift team leader on a BT helpdesk for Internet issues and worked my way up. These days I work from home and sometimes venture out to speak at conferences. I earn a little more than £52k a year and I have no degree or formal qualifications past A Level, I just happen to be good at what I do...and I'm in a niche market.
If you are good at webslinging, then go for it. I'd also add that there's good freelance money to be made in SEO stuff too.
You really don't have to deal with 'the public' to have a good career!
Uch I'm so lame, I cannot even use the phone. No body ever bothers ringing my mobile because they know I will not answer, I have trouble on the phone with my family. I wish I was earning 52k a year! hehe. Thank you for your suggestion though, fellow Welshy?

You're right, I would rather not deal with people at all. But I think eventually I *could* cope with co-workers, but the actual jump to work in a place with co-workers initially would be really difficult, maybe to the point where I back out.
I'd rather co-workers than customers, at least you can slightly trust co-workers a little more rather than a passer by.
But ideally a place where no one at all would be perfectHow about a spot of lighthouse keeping?
That sounds like a superb job, I don't know much about it though - do you? I only know of one lighthouse in my area, and that's a place for people to go for a vacation! Though this is quite an intriguing idea. No idea what is involved!
@chaotic_j
About a month ago, I said to my partner that I think I could possibly consider working at the post office, and even my sister had mentioned that maybe that is something I could go for, and my partner then decides to tell me it's not really a girl's job and that he doesn't think I'd like it there. Which has really put me off.
Just curious, what is it that you sell on eBay? Things from your home or do you buy in stock and resell?
@chaotic_j & @Hermia
I don't really have anything left to sell apart from the computer that I am typing from now, which is really my only 'connection to the world'. Although it helps sometimes I believe it may amplify the problem sometimes. I do have moments when I want to sell it to see what I do with myself thereafter, but I don't think I will really get much money for it.
I have also tried with my web design, and I did everything I knew how to, made YouTube videos, put it on gumtree, in the yellow pages, advertised on websites - but no one seem interested.
I know everyone is right and that I should get my problem sorted, I just don't think after the last time I saw my Doctors and the way they treated me just, I can't put my trust in them again.
@paulwf I'm definitely trying to get something night based at a store
@pookiewn I don't talk on the phone at all, in one of my jobs they used to let the phone ring and make me answer it, because they knew how scared I was at answering the phone - I think they were just trying to help but they only really made it worse for me. Selling things on eBay is super easy, but i've pretty much sold everything I can.
As for doing invoices for my dad, I can't do that anymore as his business went into liquidation couple of months back, thats why i'm going to have no where to live soon, hence why I quickly need to find a job. It all sounds like some sort of drama/soap! Deary me.Js_Other_Half wrote: »I know this may be off topic, but is there any chance you could have autistic tendencies rather than a social phobia? I just read the description on their website, and I don't believe I have autism...I understand people pretty well, I understand their face expressions and I'm quite good at reading people's personalities, I'm just really bad at interacting, being confident and trusting people. I could be wrong though I may have it, but I just don't think I do.Rockporkchop wrote: »How about embalmer or mortuary assistant?
Oooh that's a bit morbid for me, maybe about 7 years ago when I was a bit of a goth I would have enjoyed that ! heheKatie,

Excuse me for asking, but what's OU?
I like this idea...0 -

even IAPT referalls are taking a while, though low intensity was offered fairly quicklyIt might be worth speaking to your GP again, and asking for the contact details of your local IAPT service or sometimes called Low intensity CBT service, as sadly there is usually an up to 18 month waiting list to see a CBT therapist.
high intensity on the other hand.. (coming up to 4 months now!)
basic web design is fairly easy to pick up, definetly look into itThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The best thing is to come up with an idea for working online, but even so you still need to avoid people. So, while making/selling something might seem obvious, you'd struggle because there are some right b4st4rds/nutters out there who get 4rsey with you. I actually had a very vicious email from a guy when I started 3 years ago just because I'd written something on a blog that said "why not look at doing ...." and he was furious that it was for Americans only and had wasted a whole 3 minutes of his life.
I'd suggest looking into - and building up - the skill of blogging and writing articles. It's not instant/great money, but over 1-2 years it can actualy add up to being good money. It also requires no interaction with any people whatsoever, briliant.0 -
I do quite a bit of SEO writing and it's great if you're doing it for yourself, but when trying to write for other people they can become unrealistic... which can take some quite advanced people skills to communicate to them what you can do, why they are being unrealistic, what is !!!!!! about their website that means you could never achieve being number 1 for their chosen keywords with their rubbish-designed site.Welshwoofs wrote: »I'd also add that there's good freelance money to be made in SEO stuff too.
I used to earn £25/hour doing SEO writing three years ago, I find it easy... but it's that whole "people thing" that is often overlooked.0
