Training pants/pull-ups or normal pants???

  • Day two start the same way as day one ended... DS refusing to use the potty then weeing on the floor. We're going to OH's DS1's harvest festival this afternoon, so pull ups will be put on... Trying very hard to be positive but its difficult when all you seem to do is clear up wee and poo :o

Hang in there! :) Go for the pull-ups for the Harvest festival incase DS produces an unwanted harvest offering!

Thinking about it my son must have been closer to 3 years as his birthday is in Oct and the reason for my 2 week intensive potty training was nursery's request that they like them potty trained by age 3 (he was going in to pre-school room in the Sept) so it was summer and we just went for it.

We're training DD1 at the mo. I've found it pretty stressful but she does seem to be getting the hang of it now. This was our 3rd attempt and DD1 is 3yrs 4 mths so we were starting to despair tbh. I thought we'd never get her out of nappies. What we did was let her fun around at home and in the garden without a nappy or pants. It wasn't until day 3 that she did a wee in the potty, after a couple more days we put her in pants. We didn't stay in the whole time, we went out for an hour or two and used pull ups, but tried to stay at home most of the time for the first few days.

If you're lucky you may have a child that will be fully trained in a week or two but there are plenty of children who take longer before they're reliable. We wanted to use pants for going out but have now gone back to pull ups for going out. I know this can sometimes confuse them but it's working quite well for us as she is now starting to tell me she needs the toilet when we're out, which she wouldn't do at first. My nerves were on edge the whole time while we were out when she was wearing pants as she isn't reliable yet.

You can also get cloth training pants (Mothercare do plain white ones which are good) which are useful for going out if you don't want to use pull ups.
  • Yesterday at nursery turned out to be better than I thought, only 2 accidents. We also discovered that DS will quite happily go on the toilet (they have tiny ones at nursery, so cute!) but does not like the potty! So I have packed the pottys away and using the toilet seat/step. Have had two accidents today so far, but I am defiantely feeling more positive today

We decide to start potty training my DD a couple of days after her seconds birthday in August. I vowed I wouldn not use pull-ups but I do occasionally use them if we are up town-unfortunately there are not enough public toilets anymore but to be fair she has never yet had an accident in them when we've been out.

After the fisrt couple of days things weren't going well and she would sit next to her potty playing on the floor and wee:mad: I nearly gave up thinking she wasn't ready but within a couple of days she had cracked it. We did introduce a sticker chart and if she got 3 stickers she got a treat. We only had to do this for 2 weeks (she was getting FAR too many treats LOL)

The only place she really has any accidents now are nursery (but that's a whole new thread!) and even then it is becoming less often.

    Good luck x

I tried potty training my ds at 2 and a half but he was useless at it, would sit on the potty for 10 mins, do nothing then wee on the floor. I gave it up for a couple of months and then he went straight to pants with no wee accidents at all. Dry at night within a week as well. I do think it is better not to rush them as friends who persevered with their children at 2 and a half even with lots of accidents were still having the same amount of accidents 6 months later whereas my son was completely dry.

However poos were a different thing - he used to tell me he needed to go just that little bit too late :rotfl: but one thing I will do next time is keep a pair of scissors in my bag. Then I can just snip the pants off rather that pulling them down his legs and smearing it everywhere  Why I didn't think of doing this at the time astounds me even now.

Thanks for that, thats kinda how we're going at the moment... how long did you leave it before you gave up? I don't wanna give up too early :o

At nursery he was fine, only two accidents, but at home, despite me sitting him on the loo for 5 mins at a time, he waits til we get downstairs before he wees on the floor.... the last time (about an hour ago) I walked in from the kitchen to see him danicng in it!

My DD is 2 and 4 mths.. she does wees in the toilet at night and during the way when she remember.. i never tried to push her yet , despite the typical question ... is she potty trained yet ?? Goodness me.. my poor girl is quite tall with long hair.. everyone thinks she is older than she is and she gets treated like that... no that she cares... she doesnt see herself like a baby.. but i care :o.
I think she is ready, I will start putting her in little knickers( the thought of her doing a poo in my cream carpet freaks me out lol) and pants, I will start on monday... I will update how we get on,hopefully my last 4 bags of nappies will be the last ones that she will use...;)

Lol! Poo on carpets is not the greatest is it?! DS has a cream carpet in his room, ironically the only time he has poo'ed on it was before I started training him :)

Sounds just like my ds!! I persevered for about 4 days to be honest, got really fed up and quite cross before deciding it wasn't his fault as he obviously wasn't ready. I do think boys need to be a bit older than girls in my experience and I really couldn't cope with all that worrying that when we went out he would wet himself. If it really isn't working then I would give up and try again in a couple of weeks/month. There is no rush but I understand the feeling that you get that they should be 'clean' by now. Your friend's kids are dry, your family tells you all their kids were dry by now and yours isn't - it makes you feel like a failure even if the comments aren't meant like that.

I would rather wait until they are truly ready and have it go smoothly than rush into things, have loads of problems and make life harder for yourself and your child than is really necessary.
