Training pants/pull-ups or normal pants???
Comments

i bought a couple of packs of cheap pants and a large bottle of disinfectant and did it during a time when i could focus on the job in hand without getting stressed. when there was an accident, i cleaned it up and new pants went on after a wash. they didn't like feeling that wet, so recognised quite quickly what they needed to do. think they were dry within a week.
i must add though that we had a bit of a setback a few weeks later when xmas came, as the excitement of the occasion overruled their thinking, so they lapsed. i didn't stress though, and started again, and after a couple of days we were back dry.
lots of encouragement and a good cloth needed :rotfl:0 -
Sorry to hijack the thread but I have just started to introduce the potty to our 2 and a half year old. Many of you are suggesting going straight into pants, do you mean normal pants??? I am just a bit worried that if I out him in 'normal' pants its is going to get messy if he has a poo in them? He goes to nursery four days a week and on average poops 2 -3 times a day.
I want to get him started but I find it all so confusing.

That's the idea, if he gets messy he won't like it and soon learn not to do it in his pants.
With both my boys I decided today was the day. Straight into pants, one was dry both day and night within 24 hours and the other took about a week for the day and had the occasional wet night after that. Both were just over two.0 -

I put both my 2 straight in to normal pants - to me wearing the pull-ups seemed too similar to wearing nappies (plus they were more expensive)
With my son (2.5 years at the time) I made sure it was in the summer and we didn't go out anywhere much in the 2 week's it took him to train and we did have a couple of poop accidents.:D
Old pants and a quick departure was required!
DD was a bit different as she trained herself very early on (wouldn't wear a nappy anymore only big girl pants) and though I recall one wetting accident at the bus stop, we really didn't have too much trouble.
In my experience (they are 7 and 5 years now) you may have a few poop type accidents even after they are potty trained (recent example my son at age 6 got caught short on way home from railway station) - yes it was messy and hilarious for him and my daughter apparently but that is life/kids

With my daughter I put her straight into pants and used pull ups at night for a couple of weeks.
It was easier at night if she asked for a wee rather than nappies but I think like everyone else they give a mixed signal.0 -
Bless him, I'm glad he found it funny and not too distressing!galvanizersbaby wrote: »I put both my 2 straight in to normal pants - to me wearing the pull-ups seemed too similar to wearing nappies (plus they were more expensive)

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts.... Today we are in pants
He chose some George pants (from Peppa Pig) out of his drawer this morning, and wrestled them on. He did look rather pleased with his 'big boy pants'
I've got today and tomorrow with him, then he's at nursery on Friday. Back with me Sat and Sun, then at nursery for two days... so I'm ready for accidents and will just keep asking him every half hour or so if he needs to go. So far he has sat on the potty twice, with no action yet, but he'll figure it out I'm sure. I think a poo accident or two will actually help him realise what he should be doing

:rotfl:DS doesn't really do distressing and embarrassing - plus anything to do with poo/underpants/bogies etc... is highly amusing at his age
I have to admit I did have a little chuckle to myself when I saw him trying to run ahead of us to get home (running in a very strange way I have to add)
I'm sure a few accidents won't hurt your son - good luck with it all

Well the first day hasn't gone very well..... DS is on his third change of clothes! He's been sat on the potty loads :T but never did anything, he was too busy playing, and just wee'd where he was (despite me asking him every 20 minutes if he wanted the potty). He is currently sat in poo (I can smell it!) so I thought I'd leave him for 5 mins to see if he tells me about it. I think this may be a slight issue as he really isn't bothered about being soaked or filthy!
Should I make him sit on the potty every 20 mins or so? He just kicks off if I take him away from what he's doing, then doesn't wanna sit! I don't wanna force it then it becomes an issue for him!
Don't get me wrong, I know its not gonna happen over night, but I was hoping for at least one wee in the potty today

He sounds like a typical boy to me Sarah
My advice (for what it's worth) would be not to force the issue and try and be as relaxed as poss (know it's easier said than done)
When you do get a result on the potty make a big deal of it and praise him lots!
Good luck0 -
Thanks, I'll try to relax
Throughout his life I've been so laid back about everything, but potty training was the one thing in his life I was not looking forward to!
I will have to make sure on Friday when he goes to nursery that he has a bag full of ttrousers, pants and socks - at least 7 pairs of each! Lol!'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars' - Oscar Wilde0 -
I put DS in pull ups, whilst doing the potty training.. telling him they were big boy pants and showing him how he could pull them up and down himself, he was thrilled, he did have the odd accident in them as they will, but it built his confidence up a bit more... that lasted a few months then i told him he was a big boy now and because he was so good with his pull ups he can try the bigger boys pants.. but kept the pull ups on for night time.
He got on fine with the small changes nappies to pullups to pants, each child is different, but he will get there..Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0
