Training pants/pull-ups or normal pants???

Hiya guys, just wanted to get a brief (pardon the pun!) idea of how everyone went about potty training.... I am about to start with DS, who's just over 2 1/2, he's used to the pottys being around (one upstairs, one downstairs) and has seen me on the loo countless times. He now tell me when he's had a poo (not that you can't smell it!) and knows when he's just had a wee.

But I'm wondering, is it better to start in pull-ups or go straight to pants? Obviously pants has more potential to make a mess, but I'd worry that he'd see the pull-ups just like nappies and not bother with the potty.

Nursery (3 days per week) will go with whatever I do, but from the way they were talking, it sounds like they expect him to be weraing pants rather than pull-ups.

Thanks from a very nervous Sx

Straight to pants. Pull ups are just nappies in a different sense. If he knows its ok to wee in a pull up why would he bother to get to the potty / loo. If he wees his pants hes soaked and uncomfy.

I went straight to pants with my eldest, but I didnt start training him the month before he was 3, but we cracked it within 3 days so was relatively problem free. DS2, 26 months is nowhere near ready for potty training so I will wait again til hes much nearer 3.

This is what worked with us but I appreciate all kids and parents are different so best to find your own style.

  • With DD1 i took her straight out of nappies and she was dry day and night from the word go no accidents ever
I did put her in pull ups off a night time for the first week but everyday she was waking up dry so i didnt bother.

With DD2 i tried with pull ups and she found them too similar to nappies and she would just do her business in them without thinking, she prefers being in knickers but she is still having accidents at least once a day but i havent properly been trying with her for that long :)
  • When potty training my two I went straight to pants. I felt that with pull ups they would not feel the wet sensation. If they don't feel uncomfortable for a few moments they may have no incentive to become dry. IMHO

I always recommend going straight to pants as pull-ups are confusing as they feel like nappies, so give all the wrong messages. In fact, modern nappies are rather too good (absorbant) as wendyl1967 has pointed out, they don't feel uncomfortable when wet, so often there is no particular motivation for the child to become trained.

Get lots of pants and keep spare clothes handy (and a bucket with floor/carpet cleaner at the ready) and go for it. Incidentally, some children, particularly boys, prefer to go straight to use a toilet, with or without a toddler seat. It rather depends on the child. If you choose the right time (ie when the child knows they are wet or wants to go, and can say/gesture) it's often fairly quick to train toddlers.

    Good luck.

  • I would agree with all the others - straight to pants. If they get used to being just as comfortable when wet, there is no incentive to use the toilet. I found with both my two that this worked the best. You just have to be prepared for a few accidents.
  • I agree with everyone else! Just go straight to pants-if you feel you have to use a pull up for whatever reason on the dd occasion then the huggies pull ups are better because they are nowhere near absorbant as the pampers easy up pants etc, and they are not as bulky or padded as a nappy. also another tip i learnt when potty training DS1 is to put one of those travel changing mts (the ones with waterproof back-in the seat of the pushchair or car seat so any accidents don't go through to the seat!!

    Good Luck!! xx
  • Thanks everyone. I've been using the Pampers Easy up pants as his nappies for some time now, and I'll use what I've got left for night times... then I've got Huggies pull ups for the night time. I did buy the Feel and Learn Pampers, but I will be taking those back now! Have got lots of pants (they look sooo cute onthe washing line!) and about 10 pairs of trousers that he can get down easily!
I don't know why but I'm really nervous about doing it! I think its because I don't wanna pressure him and it goes wrong!
How long should I leave it before I stop, if it doesn't look like he's 'getting it'? I don't wanna drag it out then make it harder in the long run :o

With my boy I used pants around the house and at nursery, but used pull-ups when going out until he was consistently dry.
  • We got pull-ups, but once she was dry around the house then we have gone back to nappies for nights and bigger journeys, which is our next challenge.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have just started to introduce the potty to our 2 and a half year old. Many of you are suggesting going straight into pants, do you mean normal pants??? I am just a bit worried that if I out him in 'normal' pants its is going to get messy if he has a poo in them? He goes to nursery four days a week and on average poops 2 -3 times a day.
I want to get him started but I find it all so confusing.
