it's likely hidden the folder and file. In Windows Explorer, TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS - click VIEW tab and check the button for SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS AND FILES.

Then in the Windows Explorer address bar (or IE, if you want) paste this:
    C:\Program Files\outlook
    and see what you see.....
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

Ah, that's worked. In the outlook folder there isn't an 'outlook.exe' just something called 'p'. I've uploaded that onto the thing, don't know if it's the right one.

It's scanning at the mo, so will keep you posted.

It seems to be ok now - no pop-ups slowing things down, etc.
Is there anything else I need to do?

Many thanks for all your help x

As I suspected, that file is indeed bad.

Also your computer has picked up a new infection so a couple of things still to fix.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for this one .....

    C:\Program Files\Diner Dash\Iml32.exe

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following program IF FOUND:

    Diner Dash

Open HijackThis and click on Scan. Check/tick the following entry ....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe /auto

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking “Fix checked”.

Delete the following File and Folder indicated in bold IF they still exist:

    C:\Program Files\Diner Dash .... folder

    C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.ex .... file

If you get an error when deleting a file right click on the file and click once on properties.

Then check to see if the Read Only attribute is checked/ticked. If it is uncheck/untick it and try deleting the file again.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

If you have a fast internet connection (Broadband) run online scans here….

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

    …and here…..

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

When running the Panda Activescan make sure you click the Free Online Virus Scan in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.

Once it has finished save the Activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Please run ALL the free scans offered by Housecall.

Make sure they both perform full system scans.

If either/both scans find something they cannot fix - perhaps because the infected files are "in use" - please make a note of the file(s) concerned and post the details back to this thread.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log so that we can check if your system is clean.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY…..

Please also give us an update on how your system is operating now.
  • You have the Alcan/Alcra worm Dibz.

    See here for removal instructions:

    http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/193/

Hope that helps. It's a real swine that one.

You are, of course, right, Alfonso. That outlook./exe file is indicative of that infection and it MAY be difficult to remove. I was trying the simple approach first before having to resort to BFU etc. I agree, though, manual removal isn't always effective.

Dibz ... I agree with Alfonso's referral; you can try the procedures in his link to remove that one.

Please post back and let us know how you get on.

I've done the Panda Activescan, do you want to see the results of that? Or shall I just go through the removal via that link?

On a side note, Diner Dash and outlook.exe didn't show up on HJT.

OK Dibz. I'd like to see the Panda scan results and a new HJT log please.

Alfonso's help there was welcome. My own "canned fix speech" for that worm is rather long and I don't like posting the instructions unless I really must!

So ... don't forget about that link. It may come in useful IF it turns out you have had a full-blown Alcan infection. (Thanks again Alfonso)

Please also let us know how your computer is behaving now. Any improvements? getting pop ups? Error messsages? Anything else odd/wrong/malfunctioning?

The computer seems to be ok, if not a little slow. When I turn on my computer, as the desktop is loading, there's an error which reads:

    'Error loading woolf287.dll
The specified module could not be found.'

Also, there's something about system configuration options which I didn't write down. I'll get that and post it next.
    No pop-ups though! :j
