I've found a program on my puter called 'ipwins' and have done a bit of research on it on the internet. Apparently, it multiplies itself and causes pop-ups. Have tried Adware Away but that doesn't pick it up on its scan and I can't delete it directly because apparently 'the file is in use'. Add/Remove programs doesn't work either.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this please? The popups are beginning to get a bit irritating.
Thank you

Boot into safemode by pressing F8 as windows starts up and you should be able to remove in in Add/Remove Programs0
-
or just press ctrl alt delete and remove the ipwins.exe from the running processes, then delete normallyThis is not an automated signature. I write this at the bottom of every message0
-
Problem being that they're may be other processes running that the program creates to prevent you from doing this.0

Hi Dibz
If all else fails ....

We'll give you more specific advice on what to remove.0 -

Your log is a mess. You have indications of multiple infections. Your operating system is up to date but you don't seem to have any antivirus, firewall, antispyware or other protection.
If so it is vital you get yourself protected NOW as it's pointless cleaning you up without it. You will become infected immediately you go online again.
Print this out for future reference.
Get yourself free antivirus (choose one) .....

Free firewall here .....

Next go to this thread and work through all the steps in the first 4 posts ....
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269
Next go here….
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
click the "browse" button and browse to……
C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe
….then click the "submit" button to upload the file.
Post back ......
1. the results of the jotti scan,
2. a new HJT log AND
3. an update on how your system is operating now.
There will be more work to do.0 -
I've done everything except the jotti scan - when I try and upload the file, I can't find outlook in Program Files? There's only Outlook Express and I can't imagine that's the right one.
Dibz x
Oh, and I've got a Windows firewall; I noticed recently that it seems to keep turning itself off though...0 -
You are right. The outlook items you would normally have are a FOLDER called "Outlook Express" in C:\Program Files and a FILE "Outlook.exe" in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11.
The thing is I am almost certain the file you have is bad. That's why I want jotti to check it out.
Try exposing hidden files & folders. Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.
Please do this and try the jotti scan again.
The Windows firewall doesn't do a good enough job of protecting you. You should install the free firewall I indicated in my last post then, after the new firewall is up and running, disable the windows firewall.
Don't forget you also need antivirus.
Run a system scan with the firewall and antivirus to clean up anything they can find then post a new HJT log with the results of the jotti scan.0
