Capital One have been terrible to us.While travelling in previous years they have blocked our cards over 3 times in one week making them impossible to use and us stranded with not a lot of money!! Then when you try and contact them to sort it!!!! It cost us hundreds of pounds in calls chasing them up to unblock our cards and more often than not they hung up on us!!

In this country their late credit card payment fees have been ridiculous!!! My husband has always paid on time and recently for this month did not receive a statement! Therefore being a busy man,he missed a payment...and got charged £200 for it!!!!!! His credit card bill was also £700 which we question as he didnt have that much on it so we fear there were more fees within that...but we have no break down on this.Madness!!!!!

Any decent card company will block a card if they start to see suspicious behaviour on it, and are unable to contact the cardholder to confirm the transactions. This can unfortunatly sometimes occur if the card starts to be used abroad. The best way to avoid this is to advise the card company of your travel arrangements in advance.

Regarding the £200 charges, just ask them for the breakdown.

Why is it that the only people that moan about a CC company are the ones that fail to pay their bill on time?

It's easy........ Pay Bill = No hassle!

If you don't intend to pay off the card every month, set up a direct debit for the minimum and it stops stuff like this from happening (unless of course, you forget to fund your current account that is.)

-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
  • Ok if you want Crap One to sit up and understand your serious about this matter, btw 200 quid in charges is huge!

Send them a Subject Access Request and a postal order for £10 -

Print your name at the bottom DON"T sign it!

They have a duty to send you a complete history of the listed account - even to the telephone conversations....

That will tell you how you racked up the £200 ........ and if one of there drones has cocked up on your account.

  • Hey DerbyDude,

I may consider doing this! Last year Crap 1 refused my payment over the phone and told me they'd be writing to me to sort out payment arrangements. Well they didn't so I got charged! I set up a SO to pay a fixed amount as I did not know what else to do. I wrote to Cap 1, have done so for 12 months. I pay every month to reduce the debt. They never explained why they refused my payment. Whilst in dispute, Crap 1 defaulted me, so I'm going to try the SAR route, plus send a cheque to settle the remainder outstanding, but with a condition that if they cash the cheque, they remove the default, to save us all the time and hassle of me complaining numerous times before having to try the FSA/FOS route which I undoubtedly would. I would love to hear the woman who told me in a phone call that I could not pay my bill. Shove it right up Crap 1's backside! lol

  • Hi

Please don't speak on the phone to theses companies......what you say in a 5 min conversation, cant be recorded on a text panel correctly, they use a sort of txt spk, and sometimes, don't list your "worry" or point of view!

Write to them, its up to them to get things right, not for you to tell them whats wrong, after all they are the ones with the "rule book!"
  • Hi DerbyDude,

Don't worry I haven't spoken to them on the phone since. Every letter is sent recorded, copies kept etc. I had only originally called to pay my bill as usual, I wanted to pay more than the minimum payment but not the full amount, and as I was still trying to sort out my finances I had no SOs and DDs set up, if I could help it, to avoid messing up and incurring charges.

By writing continuously, Crap 1 eventually agreed to repay the erronous charges they piled on my account, but would never agree to my repayment plan of £10 per month. I've been called and written to so much, am seriously considering a harrassment complaint against them, as they call several times a week despite my requests not to, and send 3 letters out within 4 days. They knew I could only pay £10 per month and no more, but still hassle me for more anyway.

I'm considering the SAR so I can hear the convo when my payment was refused. I think thats the key bit of proof I need in my argument against them and their gross mistakes! I really don't know what to do, I have a £70 cheque sat here to pay off my balance, to go with a letter requesting the removal of the default immediately as it should never have been issued (1, because of their refusal to accept my payment and 2, because the account was in dispute when they issued the default).

Should I send the SAR OR the cheque and default letter OR both? I really don't know what to do, I just want this over with! :(

    Many thanks!

I have no problems with capital one. I keep my account in good order. I find thats the best way to avoid too many issues. And ive been lucky enough that they have never screwed up routine billing matters.

I would have agreed with you up until the time my card was refused in a restaurant in front of family and friends. :o I have a huge credit limit that I never get within a £1000 of and clear the bill every month. I've given up on a response to the complaint I made over 4 months ago.

If I could find a better cashback card that suited me I'd be waving goodbye to Cap1

I'd send the SAR and if you have a different way of paying (via a bank) the monies ... don't send them a cheque....it has your signature on it!

As for you sending them a default removal wait until you have ... ...... the SAR bundle it proves that they had cocked things up.....

I'll hold off on the cheque and letter then as was hoping that by sending full payment I could just get the default removed & be done with it!

Will get SAR letter in post today. Guess I'll have to pay my £10 installment this month afterall :(
