can anyone help me?!! capital one credit card charges

Options
My husband and I are a young couple who don't have a lot of money but we both work hard.Lately the world seems to be against us.I'll get to the point. My husband had not received a statement from capital one for this month and has been so busy he forgot to pay off his card.He had £700 on there (I feel some of that may be late payment charges from the previous month although he claims not).Today he has had to pay £900 in what he owed and£200 late payment charges.
Is this even possible??!!
He has now hardly any money in his account and we are going to struggle this month. They demanded he paid the full amount which is fine but not with £200 on top!!!
I just dont understand .Other people are complaining about £12 charges here and there , which we could handle but this is such a huge amount of money.
What do we do ? Capital one have said that the charges are correct.

Ask them for a break down of the additional £200. Then post that detail here if you still need help.

  • thank you for this. They are sending a full statement etc. They vaguely chucked some spiel at my husband that he is on a special account that if he goes over a certain amount the interest sky rockets.I will be interested to see what the break down is when the statement arrives.
  • It's quite easy to set up on line banking with Capital One... might be worth setting up an on line account and you will be able to view on line statement, and they have a service where they email you reminders to pay, or if you are going over your limit....

I followed all the usual steps (see the reclaiming templates on Martin's article) and didn't even have to go to the FOS - they refunded back all my £12 charges plus interest - it took around 3 months.

They play the game and say no at first but then cave! Worth a go in the meantime.

Why are they asking for the full amount? Has he missed any payments or been consistently late paying? Usually they just request the minumum (not recommended as will take forever to pay back at that rate).

FYI it's only one £12 late payment charge a month they levy. Not £200 ! Maybe that is interest?? Even so that sounds extortionately high, even for Cap1.

I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok - they know me here! :D
