Ubuntu 9.04 and radio

Options
Have been running Ubuntu 9.04 for about a month with no major problems. However, I'd like to listen to BBC Radio on line. Have installed both Helix and Real players but don't know how to get the stations installed! Hope a Linux expert out there can give me some pointers!!

Thanks

    Hi
If you don't want to use iPlayer then 'Rhythmbox' is OK for BBC and other online radio stations. Look for it in the Ubuntu repository.
With Rhythmbox, when you use the 'New internet Radio Station' button you need to know the URL for the stations. Ask again if you need help.

  • Haven't tried iPlayer yet but have seen Rhythmbox. - which I was looking to use! Do I need helix/real players to hear BBC stations via Rhythmbox? I thought that I needed one of them to be able hear the BBC stations via Rhythmbox but I've prbably misunderstood what is required! How do I find urls for the BBC stations and get them installed on Rhythmbox? Any help much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi
    The links are here:- http://beebotron.org/index.php?reload#BBC_Live_Radio_Links
The ones that I use are half way down the page where it says 'RealAudio links - all should be at 64 kbps'.
Just use 'copy' and 'paste' to put them into Rhythmbox.
For example, Radio 4 FM is:- rtsp://rmlive.bbc.co.uk/bbc-rbs/rmlive/farm/live24/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_nb_int_live.ra

Right-click on the link then choose 'Copy Link Location'. This copies the link to your clipboard.
Then right-click and paste it into Rhythmbox.

  • Oh dear, I'm getting a 'couldn't start play back' error for the couple of links I've copy and paste! Can't get any sound from any of the pre-listed stations. Do I need to set up Rhythmbox in some way first?

OK, I think that's because you need to install a multimedia codec pack from Ubuntu.
Look in the repository and see if there is a pack called 'w32codecs'. If there is then install it.

  • Can't find w32codecs pack!
