Not eligible for voting. Must we give our data?

We have received the infamous electoral roll form to complete.

We are not eligible for voting therefore I have always been told that I do not need to completed and send the form back.

However, reading it carefully, it says that if I am not eligible for voting I need to complete part C and D only, sign and send it back.

It also says that if we don't do it or provide wrong information we can be fined up to 1000 GBP. :-(((

Must we give them our data even if we are not eligible for voting (no British citizenship)? The text is not clear on this matter....

Thanks,
Steve

  • It's probably safer for you to just fill it in where it says to and then you won't have to worry.

Yes - you must fill it in regardless of your nationality and eligability to vote. Failing to do so can result in a fine. It is a simple form and should take you a couple of seconds. I think you can even do it on line. If you do not wish to be on the one they can sell to companies, then tick the opt-out box.

If you ever want credit, not being on the electoral role will be a problem. Jurors are selected from it too. It is also used for fraud prevention purposes.

(Some non-British citizens can vote, my partner is not a British citizen, but lives in the UK and is entitled to vote in some elections).

  • It will affect you financially if you're not on it, making it harder to get credit, maybe having to pay for some things in advance, or being charged higher rates of interest because it makes banks consider you a higher risk.
  • It is also how councils keep track of council tax payees.
  • It is also how they make money selling your data to junk mailers.

Not if you opt out of the being on the edited register.

No, this is incorrect. They (in the form) state they have two different databases managed by different rules. Otherwise, they would already have our names from the council tax database, but they cannot access apparently.

Yeah, I was just reading in this very same forum of a lady who chose to be opted out and she was in instead! Not encouraging.
  • Thanks for your all replies folks, however if the sole problems would only be of us not being able to get loans or mortgages, as this does not affect us, then we would choose not to complete the form.

Never had problems with banks or interests especially if you show you know what are you talking about.

I feel my original query has been sort of skipped: I asked: do they really have the legal rights of sending the police at our address and arrest anyone found living there as we did not complete that form? In other words is there a written law which obliges non-British citizens residents to complete the form? Or what I read in the form is untrue?

I have noticed that public bodies and such have also the unhealthy habit of threaten citizens with easiness. That's why i don't take that sentence that seriously.

Never heard of anyone been fined tbh.
