TV license people are plebs. Last letter I got was threatening enforcement action for me not having a license, I moved in on March 31st and applied for one on April 1st. Still getting these letters and Im actually quite looking forward to a trip to court. The plebs!!
  • Just a reminder from someone who had over a year of threats from this bunch of cowboys. I did get rid of them with the aid of my MP.

    1. You only need a TV licence to watch or record LIVE TV (albeit from any source).
    2. You DO NOT have to tell TVL that you do not have/need a TV licence.
    3. They have the same right of access to your property as your paper boy, you can legally ban them if you wish (I have).
    4. You do not have to answer any questions or speak to them - except to tell them to go away - politely of course !!
    5. TV detector van evidence has NEVER been used in Court as the evidence would not be allowed as:
    a. TVL refuse to disclose how the technology of these things works. (if it does !)
    b. This comes under the same sort of surveillance as telephone tapping, must only be used/authorised at VERY high level on an individual basis.
    6. Please DO write to your MP about them, it will do some good eventually.
    7. If you watch live TV - BUY A LICENCE AND STOP SPONGING OFF OTHERS !!!

    Thanks for that Moonrakerz,

I've received threatening letters from them which I have been filing under 'b' - and will continue to do so. Interesting that their letter demands that you call them to inform them if you don't require a licence . I don't own a tv (or watch tv on any other device) and don't intend to waste my time attempting to prove I don't to a bunch of ppl who will no doubt presume I'm lying.

Have a read of this website http://www.tvlicensing.biz/ for advice. The TV licencing people are insiduous and try scare tactics. They seem to think that everyone in the whole country can't possibly live without watching live TV and that anyone who says they're only watching DVD/video is an inherent liar!

They are all about Huffing and Puffing but they dont have any actual teeth.

I think they only took about 10 people to court last year, only applied for about 2 warrants, and the average fine was only about 10% more than the cost of the TV license itself (nowhere NEAR the £1000 fine they band about!)
Just wondering but where did you get these statistics from?

  • Seconded - all those posts which say ignore them - we had a house which was in the process of being gutted. They wrote to the address on a regular basis - absolutely horrible letters. I contacted them & told them I considered it harrasment; I refused to give them our name (they didn't have a name on their records) and they said that without a name, they would continue to write to the address. They continued to write to the property; I used their letters to start the bonfires we burned the rubbish with. Over the next 18 months they never did anything other than bluster. Had I actually been living there, or had the letters been sent to an elderly relatative, they would have the potential to cause distress, and I would have taken action - MP and police report of harrasment, I think.

  • So, presumably, you were watching tv without a licence, then?
