Bread recipe

Hi - just joined after browsing this very helpful forum for sometime now...
I used to make my own bread using a breadmaker and personally much prefered it to supermarket sliced bread... unfortunatly..DH preferred the sliced stuff for his sarnies... However I have decided to start making the odd loaf again as I know my toddler would love to *help* and he loves "bare bread"!
Could someone let me have a recipe and let me know what flours to buy (and the cheapest)?
Thanks!

Go to https://www.recipezaar.com and look for their awesome bread recipe - never fails! Its lovely for rolls as well. my tip in making rolls is to get one of those wshable teflon sheets to use instead of baking paper - your rolls will never stick to the pan.
Buy Lidls strong bread flour or Morrisons but Tescos cheapy never seem too good. I also buy a little box of yeast from Tesco at about 99p instead of using a sachet each time- you keep it in the fridge - i usually put it in a little sealable box - saves it spilling.0 -
I sometimes make flour in the breadmachine with just ordinary (el cheapo usually mixed with wholemeal) plain flour if I have run out of strong - and although its not as good as using strong it is still preferable in flavour and texture to shop bought bread.0

a handful of buckwheat or rye flour to bread (or cakes) makes them taste farmhousey. (does that make sense?) :-/
Its quite expensive flour though so just a handful is enough and not sure what its like in a breadmaker.
If anyone knows where to get a cheaper supply of the flours would be interested, my mum is a coeliac so uses quite alot of these type of flours.0 -

Locally I am a member of a wholefood co-op which orders twice a year from a wholefood wholesaler - we get the products at cost + 2.5% to cover admin costs. If there isn't one locally maybe you could try drumming up interest to start one?
Our supplier is Suma, which you can find at https://www.suma.co.uk
It is great for things like pulses, herbs, spices, flour and speciality wholefood items that you use a lot of - it is not good (pricewise) for staples that you would usually buy at the supermarket.0 -
Thanks will have a look at their website.0

I've got a breadmaker cook book, what recipe would you like? And what size loaf are you planning on making - small, medium or large (1llb, 1.5llb or 2llb).
Here's a recipe for medium loaf
White Bread
320ml water
500g white bread flour
1.5tsp salt
1tbsp granulated sugar
25g butter
5ml/1tsp easy-blend dried yeast
Pour water into bread machine. Sprinkle over flour, ensuring the water is covered. Add the salt, sugar and butter in seperate corners of the bread pan. Make a small indent in the centre of the flour (but not as far down as the liquid) add the yeast. (For a richer golden crust at 1.5tbsp of skimmed milk powder to the flour)
Set the bread machine to the basic/normal setting, medium crust. Press start.
I have about a hundred bread recipes in this book, anyone looking for anything? Might as well make some use of this book!0 -
I never realised you put sugar in bread :-/0

Its pretty much essential as it feeds the yeast that makes the bread rise - it's not a lot though.0 -
this is recipe that daughter use to make her delicious bread (without breadmaker)
1/4 pint milk
250g bread-making flour
sachet yeast
pinch salt
put flour in bowl with yeast and salt,
warm milk until lukewarm
add milk to bowl
mix together then knead on a floured surface for 5 mins
place into buttered bread tin
cook in oven at 180 degrees for 45 mins
can check if cooked by tapping on base of loaf and getting a hollow sound
This is how she makes it and believe me it's gorgeous ;DI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards.
