Slighty different to the original question posed, but I was surprised by how poorly Ecover rated in terms of being an 'ethical' product/supplier.
Have a look at www.ethiscore.org which gives different products a score based on different environmental and ethical criteria. Ecover products scored lower than I would have expected.

Just had a look jo-b and must say I was suprised too. Even though I really like the toilet cleaner I've ordered some bio d, in true green-money-saving-style because it was a bit cheaper. Will post in a week or so as to what we think of it.MFW 1/5/08 £45,789 Cleared mortgage 1/02/13

This may seem a stupid question but what are they made of and how do they work?

I've used Ecover products for over four years now and have never had any problems with any of them. I use the washing powder combined with the conditioner and my clothes always come out clean and fresh. I tend to work on my car alot and it shifts motor oil and greese with no pre-treatment! More than can be said of some other mainsteam brands!
I also find the washing up liquid better than most and the smell is lovely. My only very, very minor gripe would be with the dishwasher tablets; they don't seem to clean as well as the larger brand, but that may be due more to the fact that I've only just started using a dishwasher and may not have gotten the rinseaid ratio right yet!
Otherwise, Ecover is definatly the product for me.
P.S I don't really find it any more expensive than the mainstream brands. Also a health shop local to me will refill empty bottles for less than the price of buying a new one! Less waste and a saving too. Might be worth others asking around to see if any of their local stores do that and post it here?
For the record, mine's The Green Parrott, Market Place, Swaffham.0 -

I never use anything other than the ecover washing up liquid and the washing powder and I've never had a problem. In fact, I think the washing up liquid is better than Fairy (and doesn't leave a film on the dishes) and the washing powder has never aggravated my family's very sensitive skin including washing nappies, which always came up lovely.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I had checked ethiscore a few weeks ago and, having been an Ecover user for a while, moved over to Bio-D and have found it just as good if not better. Early days yet, but I think I'll stick with Bio-D - ethically sound and green as well

I really like the point that welf_man made about considering transport costs -- what is the point of using something like Ecover if in transport, a huge amount of pollution is spewed into the environment? I'm looking for Bio-D products ASAP.0

anyone know of where the cheapest supplier of bio-d is? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I am a member of a food cooperative. We group order together once a month from the SUMA catalogue. It is the company that supplies Health food stores. You have to buy multi packs of things but you get them at wholesale prices plus 3%. We split packs between us if we buy similar things. It works out a lot cheaper for all the Ecover stuff and all other things found in health food stores.
If you ask around you may find a group in your town. I am in a Preston one if anyone is interested pm me. The order is done once a month and then delivered to one persons house once a month. We try and collect that day then their house is not cluttered up for a long time.Wendy0
