Hi, I have just ordered a goodmans Lcd telly from empire, seemed a good deal for 26" telly, dvd recorder and home cinema package reduced from £1099 to £408. The telly is not HD ready but I'm sure I read somewhere that you will be able to buy something to connect to the tv to enable this, is that correct and if so what exactally is it and how much will it cost approx...thanks in advance.

All television in the UK has been High Definition since 1936!

If you mean receiving HDTV signals then that'll be your set-top box.

However, you won't be able to display HDTV at the intended resolution just a scaled-down version of it. So you won't be able to enable that feature by buying an add-on.

Doesn't sound right to me. TVs used to be 576 lines (visible) from a 625 line signal.

HD ready TVs are 720lines and 1080 lines depending on quality IIUC

IMO OP you can't turn a non HDTV into an HDTV by plugging something into it.

I thought standard resolution was something like 578x380.

High definition is 720 and 1080, these refer to the horizontal pixels, ie 1280x720 and 1900x1080.

And with regards to plugging something in, sadly no you can't.

If you're referring to receiving digital channels instead of analog. Then all you need is a freeview box, or sky equivalent that plugs inbetween the aerial and your tv.

Thanks for your help but I think I will still keep the telly as it seems a good deal and has a built in freeview but will need to update my aerial, I live in a 3 storey house so god knows how much that will cost me!

I guess you havent seen HD yet then?

Surely there was nothing wrong with the radio before TV was invented and then nothing wrong with B&W TV before colour TV was invented?

There is nothing wrong with it as there was nothing wrong with the radio or B&W TV (though personally it makes my eyes go funny due to colour blindness) but people want better and so when technology allows it they buy better.

If you are trying to save money why not buy a B&W TV and be happy with its picture and the saving on the TV licencing fee?

As to the OP - no you cannot buy an add on to make a screen HD "ready". One of the defining requirements to carry the badge is having a screen which can display at least 720 lines so to enable this on a SD set would require replacing the screen itself.

I have as I went to Japan 5mths ago and went to a Sony superstore and well they can keep them for the astronomical price difference when equated to the picture difference its just not worth it especially added together with the cost of the credit card bill and interest, as thats the only way most of these new fandangled gizmo's will be paid for (probably).

Its just another must have that you dont need.

P.S trying to put Radio against Tv is a ridiculous analogy as they are two different types of media.

Well I guess I don't NEED cinema surround speakers but what a difference they make especially when watching a scary film. There is nothing wrong with keeping up with the jones so long as it doesn't get you into debt and with things like entertainment it is ok but I definately won't buy £70 trainers for my kids, like it or lump it.
