another sky question

I have had sky installed since about April, and i am not getting hassled to take out sky insurance at £7.50 extra per month.
I am told that i now "own" my sky equipment and if it goes faulty they will charge me to come out to fix it. At no point in their sales talk when they wanted to sign me up did they inform me about this.

This is an extra £90 per year [ not a one off ] on top of what i am already paying and to me seems a huge con. Any other electrical goods are guaranteeded at least a year, so whey is this equipment not?

Are they allowed to do this and if so is there a way round this that i don't get charged for call outs in the first year if something happens to go wrong?

Ignore the sales calls for extra insurance.

Your Sky box is guaranteed for at least a year and I actually have argued the point with them that it's technically at least 2 years under EU rules.

After that you can still argue the toss with them - I haven't paid for a service call yet as I have threatened to cancel if one isn't provided free of charge.

Even if they say no to a free call out it only costs £65 for a service call which will replace anything faulty - the extra insurance isn't worth it.

This is an EU directive - it is not UK Law.

Last I heard we were part of the EU so don't see why it should not apply.

    However UK Sales of Goods Act does state ;

    • For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

Good advice - just to clarify directives are not the same as laws.

Many people for example quote the working time directive,, whereas what actually applies in the UK are the working time regulations

    1. EU directives have to be passed into Law in each country.

    2. SoGA is a bigger bag of worms than the mythical 2 year EU "Law" !

    1. Don't buy rip off insurances.
    2. Digiboxes do fail sometimes, but Sky will replace within 12 months, or longer if you threaten to cancel!
    3. Don't worry about legislation. Remember, Sky has not sold you the digibox, so that the SOGA may not apply, or at the very least the waters are muddied.
    4. There are reputable repairers of digiboxes. They charge c£40.
    RIP independent MSE.

In April next year, when your Guarantee runs out you will be inundated with telephone calls and mail shots offering you insurance for the next year.

99% give the impression that they are ringing from Sky (very naughty) but they are not. Just ignore them, bin the letters, if they ring just put the phone down on the worktop and play them at their own game.

If you want further insurance give Sky a ring yourself then.
But as another poster says, you can ask for a free service or even paying £65 is cheaper that an annual payment of around £90

If you want to stop receiving the calls and letters contact sky and tell them you wish to cancel your subscription as they have obviously sold your details on and you are being harrassed. They will stop almost instantly. I was receiving two calls a day, I called sky and was very firm - I had not given them permission to pass on my details - Data Protection says they should not give my details out without my permission - as far as I was concerned they had breached contract so I was leaving. They apologised and the calls stopped. :)

    Did you actually leave?

IIRC Sky do not sell your details on. The only calls I ever got about extending my insurance were from Sky themselves. And I only ever had two calls in total.

I did get a few letters from other companies who seemed to indicate that they might have something to do with Sky - but don't

The OP is probably tied into a contract for a year so wouldnt be able to cancel.

He probably wouldnt want to anyway.
