A neat alternative to the NUS card is the SIN (StudentsInNeed) card that costs £4.95 (half the cost) and gives discounts of up to 20%, plus a voucher book with a further £200-worth of savings. I applied online and mine arrived within a few days – cool eh! As a member, you also have the chance to win £500.0

What a load of tosh. By law if somewhere offers student discount and you are a student you can get that discount just by flashing your normal student car. With or without the NUS.
The NUS card is a total waste of money and doesn't gain you anything that your actual student card cant.0 -

It depends if they state student discount or NUS card.
Some places state student discount so you just need something that proves that you are a student i.e. uni card, there as others state NUS discount and others state student discount then mention the proof required.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Which law is this?
It's up to the retailer what they are happy to take as proof of being a student. 0 -
The Student Discounts (at Point of Sale) Act 1990 - surely everyone knows about this act?Which law is this?
It's up to the retailer what they are happy to take as proof of being a student.
Section 2 clearly states that every shop advertising a student discount, MUST accept any proof of student status and MUST give an immediate 10% discount.
Failure to adhere to Section 2 is an offence under the act and subject to a fine not exceeding £1000 and 6 months imprisonment.

Sorry, I couldn't help it!0 -
NUS have bargaining power because they represent the market of all NUS Extra cardholders. Hence stores that wouldn't normally give a student discount may give an NUS cardholder discount.
Here in Edinburgh almost any actual shop or venue takes my Matriculation Card as proof. It's online where things get tricky.0 -

It's not an NUS Extra - it's got my student union's logo and the NUS logo on the top, with my photo and details.... Does this entitle me to discounts at the cinema etc?
Also...I tried entering the 6 digits on the front of my card on the Topshop website hoping that I'd be able to get my 10% off online... but it says it's invalid....can the discount only be used instore??
Thank you!!
Heyy
It sounds like you have your student card and not your NUS extra card. As far as i'm aware all student cards have the NUS logo on the top because they are connected with Universities right across Britain.
I have used my normal student card to gain discounts on my things from new look, top shop etc before. Although, i have been told by the shop assistants in New Look that many places will only accept NUS Extra now
But, prior to being told this i did have ALWAYS used my student card to get tickets at the cinema for a discounted price. I think cinema's just want proof that your a student and then that way they can give you the student priced ticket.
I've used the Topshop discount before..I think it's because you need to enter the right amount of digits. In my case i had to shorten my student number. Just ask at your Uni and they should tell you which part of the number you need to use.
If you've applied for an NUS and payed for it, then you should get it via your student union and you'll be on your way to a wardrobe full of clothes that you got at a discounted price
Hope this has helped
