NUS Card..

So I picked up my NUS card from uni today... Im just confused as to whether this is the one you can use to get discount at Topshop etc... It's not an NUS Extra - it's got my student union's logo and the NUS logo on the top, with my photo and details.... Does this entitle me to discounts at the cinema etc?
Also...I tried entering the 6 digits on the front of my card on the Topshop website hoping that I'd be able to get my 10% off online... but it says it's invalid....can the discount only be used instore??

Thank you!!

    Did you pay for it?
  • If it doesn't say NUS extra then it won't work on Topshop's website, or with most other companies. It sounds like you have the standard NUS card.

have a look at the NUS website and it shows you a picture of the NUS extra card. It costs £10 but can be good value depending on how much you spend.
  • Did I read something on here that say if you're a full-time student your entitled to Student discount without NUS membership if your uni had opted out of NUS.

So does this mean that the £10 is just a ploy to fund high profit retailers?
  • Unfortunately there is student discount then there is NUS student discount. A lot of the big retailers are tied into an agreement that means they only offer discounts to NUS extra cardholders. There are still some that will give discount to any student e.g Schuh, and some of the cinemas. I'm sure there are more but they're not coming to me at the moment.

Even though your card isn't NUS Extra, it will work on topshop website. You just need to put zeros in front of the number. I think the required amount of digits is 13 or something, so just add on the required number of zeros. Topshop are happy to accept a standard NUS card in store.
  • the £10 can be a good saving! For three years myself and my mates used to go to Nandos once a week and you got BOGOF.

Say the meal was £8 each - and we paid every other time, thats at least 20 x £8 which far outweighs the £10 for the card

Couldn't agree more... I have used my NUS EXTRA card to get insurance, stationery, books, food, cinema and much much more.... recon I must have saved over £40 already and we are only in the second week!

I know that some shops, or shop assistants will let you get a discount without the real NUS Extra card but it can be a bit embarrasing when they say no... much easier to just have NUS Extra and then you are sorted!

You can get one now free if you sign up to Lloyds Student banking and you can add ISIC to your card for £1, which gives you international benefits too.

My son's NUS Extra card took nearly 6 months to arrive. Ordered it last September and, after much chasing up and many excuses, it arrived in March.

I bought one a few years ago but didn't use it very much. Most shops round here (and at home) (except those tied to NUS) offer a discount on just showing my student card.
