And before you catch me out, he was not moaning when he told us about the toilet breaks etc, just rather amused at the pettiness.

To put the other side, I know a lad from Poland who has landed himself a proper job with a blue chip employer, in Ireland, with full training package (accountancy) so not all are treated so badly.

He is not a shelf stacker but a picker in a warehouse. They have different conditions. The Government told the migrants they were needed here. Told them there was a labour shortage.

Does he actually work for Tesco or third party? apologies if you have already answered.

  • I have read this thread with fascination, the OP’s friend (whilst not bemoaning, according to her) is actually moaning big time. May I ask, has he children in Poland and are they getting the UK children's allowance rather than the local Polish? My cleaner told me her sister landed a part time job back there and said she would be paid £30.00, I said, excellent (thinking per day) No (per week)
NO, per bloody month, admittedly part time (4 hours per day. 5 day’s a week) If he is unhappy and afraid of losing his job, his destiny is in his own hands, work correctly = no job loss. If the UK, which for all it’s faults is still a beacon to all these people seeking a better wage / life that they can find in this Nirvana homeland actually find it is a nose against the grindstone culture, tough, go back to Nirvana. PS / the OP seems to have a particular virulence against Tesco rather than the agency employing her hard done by friend, poor thing!

He is not Polish and is single. He has never claimed a penny in benefits. I'm afraid its Tesco rules, and Tesco rules mean work correctly = job loss (in your words). I'll repeat for the umpteenth time, the Government encouraged "these people" to come here. There was some kind of myth that they spread around Europe that there was a labour shortage in Britain. I blame 'those people' who used to moan about the price of plumbers. Nowadays you can get a very cheap illegal Polish plumber and they still moan. Where is the Nirvana that he should go back to by the way?

I dislike any company that exploits people and takes all the profit rather than putting something back into society. So if that means being virulent against Tesco then so be it and if they were not willing to employ agency workers then the agencies would not be in business. Its not rocket science for goodness sake.

  • Christ you have a chip on your shoulder, you intensify my "these people" to imply I mean these people in a prerogative sense / I really don't give a !!!! if he is single, has kid's / works for tesco / m&s/ but he IS a moaner. Therefore, if life is so bad in the UK why doesn't he up sticks and go back to this land of nectar whilst not being poland I am sure it is a former soviet satellite / wow, that was a pinnacle of humanity being "Oh please have this,, no no I insist you have it" compared to this bad assed bad UK? Two things a0 may I ask who, what you actually work at? & b) Why is it always always the UK and / or its successful companies that get it in the neck for actually giving somebody a home / job etc? that one truly puzzles me because if life is a !!!!! for your friend / at least he can !!!!!! off back to this fabled land of milk and honey he hails from. The rest of us will just have to suffer in this gad awful UK where nobody is actually starving, etc etc

If people like your friend didn't work for these companies, they would have to offer staff better working conditions. If anything, the influx of cheap foreign labour, willing to work in a poor environment, has helped to erode working conditions for unskilled people/jobs. ;)

No they didn't, they just did not block these workers as many other countries did ( I think just three countries allowed the new entrants in). It is more perhaps an assumption made by these workers, due to the fact that they were allowed to work.
BTW I am not saying that the Labour govt did not see the advantages in cheap foreign labour and the effect on inflation.

I quoted the phrase 'these people' because of your obvious predjudice against migrants. You are the one with the chip on your shoulder because of your sarcastic reference to the land of milk and honey and other comments. Are we now living in an Orwellian society where no-one is even allowed to make a comment about their working conditions? It is surely human nature to refer to them. Do you sir, work under such conditions?

My OH is in the building trade and our income has suffered so much that it is difficult to manage as a direct result of immigration and the credit crunch. However, how can an individual be blamed for doing the best for themselves? I work in a school office and I suppose I am going to be castigated for having a reasonably secure job (although we are expecting some redundancies in the near future).

Well, I distinctly remember a couple of years back of frequent reference to the labour shortage here. I must also disagree with you because why else did the government set up centres to train migrants in the building trades such as plumbing etc if they didnt think there was a shortage? Was it just done to undercut prices? They paid for their courses, their Corgi membership and even for vans and tools. I believe they are still doing it whilst there are thousands of unemployed building workersn in this country.
