2 adults 1 child we spend approx £30 a week but if i can get her to go on school dinners it will be less cos the things i buy for packed lunches always gets eaten before its supposed to !!
but surely school dinners are quite expensive and would have to be added to your spend per week?
  • What time do you class as having a late meal  What time do you go to bed? I agree not eating late but that to me is any time after 9pm so not sure why you don't have another meal around 5-6pm?

You might be skinny but to me your calorie intake is insufficient - you sound as though you are slowly starving TBH. According to NHS website for average male 2,500 calories is needed per day - given what you've posted I can't see you even halfway near that.
So might be cheap but not very good for your body.

absolutely! Anyone can live on 3 quid a week if they only consume a third of the calories they need! While it's great to try and avoid wastage and unnecessary spending, to live on 2 unbalanced meals a day is just unrealistic.

I find milk and cheese is rarely on offer anyway, so if that's the only time you're buying it, it can't be that often, and as others have said, unless you're getting calcium from elsewhere then you could end up saving money, but paying for it with your bones!
If you think you can't or you think you can, either way you are right :D

i sometimes have meat like chicken but i never red meat because it's not as healthy. i eat a lot more fish than meat.

i managed to get 4 loaves of bread at 14 pence each at sommerfields today:D

You are concerned about being healthy and yet your diet bears no resemblance to UK nutrition guidelines based on peer-reviewed scientific studies?? I have taken modules at degree level in nutrition and, trust me, there is NO evidence that not eating after 4pm is beneficial to health. On the contrary ideally we would all eat small meals/ snacks every three to four hours during waking hours.

As others have pointed out 2500 kcal per day is required for an average male, including a balance of protein, carbs and fat. If you are going to have vegetarian days you should be eating protein at each meal and snack, as the body simply cannot store spare amino acids. You should be having a minimum of five portions of fruit or veg EVERY day (potatoes do not count), and two portions of dairy products EVERY day.

You may well be slim and 'apparently' healthy on your present diet, as the human body is very clever at down-regulating any process it considers non-essential such as immunity. Your current diet is bordering on anorexia: a condition that commonly leads to cardiac damage as protein is lost from this key muscle.

£100 a month for two 23 year olds here. That includes the cleaning bits though.

Thought that was quite good ... then I read this topic! That isn't including things like bread and milk which comes to about a fiver a week aswell.

We don't really cut back on food, I prefer 'real' bread over value stuff. We take packed lunches so like to get half decent ham and little snacks.

We probably have a take away once or twice a month and eat out at a restaurant every other month. Then we also get cheap but very nice meat like fillet steak, pork and lamb chops, chicken fillets and other bits from a butcher we know. That comes to another £25 a month but when you consider we get sic nice juicy fillet steaks with that, again we don't mind forking out for that.

So really you could say we are spending about £150pm on food.

Neither of us earn bundles and have mortgage AND rent to pay and still manage to save about £100 a month and overpay the mortgage on average £500 at the start of each month. I think thats quite good but it looks like we could save a bit more on the food bill.

I probably spend way too much money on food, think about 35ish a week just for myself.

I like eating and enjoy 'nice' food...and I'm also doing weight watchers, so always buy leaner meats and lots of veggies, healty snacks...
My partner can't eat tomatoes, so Pasta&Tomato Sauce, Chilli and load of other 'cheap filling' meals are out the question when I cook for the two of us. And I only eat chicken, turkey & fish[don't like beef, pork, lamb or saussages]
I've not had a take away or have eaten out in weeks as I currently am out of work, so don't want to spend the extra money.

  • Wow i have just read through this thread and wanted to say well done to everyone who manages to live on a budget of 30 - 60 pound a week, However sorry but i dont believe a word Dave says, if he is living on 3 pound a week then he is putting his health at risk and is asking for trouble. We are a house of 2 adults and 2 kids and we normally do 150 first week of the month and then 80 pound there after but this month as been really hard money wise so we have lived on a budget and i am surprised how it can be done so next month my goal is to spend 100 pound first week of the month including cat food and toiltrees and cleaning stuff and then 20 - 30 a week there after. It working is another matter but going to try so watch this space lol. So max is 220 per month. So wish me luck and again well done to everyone

I don't believe a word Dave says either.
For a start you can't pick blackberries all year, nor can you get apples from your tree for very long.

We must spend about £70 a week for 2 adults and 2 kids, but that's with all good meat and probably way too much junk we don't need tbh.

I know we got it down to about £38 a week before including locally shot wild meat.
Everything we eat is cooked from scratch apart from the odd Asda PYO pizza.

when i read that the op only spends £3 per week i thinks my eyes nearly popped out
i can't believe that anyone can survive and have an enjoyable existance on that amount surely unless they are growing all their on food ,
i spend on a good week 60ish to 90-100 on a bad week for 2 adults and 2 teenage kids + 1 cat , this inc all food , drink and household goods - shampoo, bog roll , plus my wife will get a few bits and peices during the week which can range from £10 to 30 .
so i'm not sure how average i am when i'm in the supermarket i look at other shoppers and they seem to be spending far more than me ,
i'm not sure if this is good or bad

my family of 2 adults and 6y old spend around 40-70 pounds. that includes beer for husband (every day) and some whiskey on weekends
when i had a job, i spent 20-30 in one go, 2-3 times a week, plus milk and bread.

now i buy everything with thinking (not eyes), and can save much more!
