IE btw keeps lots and lots of secret records on your surfing habits and sends them to MS (as does defender) which you can not delete from IE, so if you do use IE get CCleaner

Any source on what data Internet Explorer reports, because I was aware only of error reports being sent after seeking permission from the user?

    For Vista
Run Windows Defender.2. Click Tools and go to Options
    3. Scroll right to the bottom and you’ll see an option “Use Windows Defender”.
    4. Uncheck “Use Windows Defender” and it’ll be disabled

For XP just uninstall via control panel

Don't compromise your security because of some bogus "Microsoft is stealing all our information" conspiracy story.

You can see what it collects here - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/resources.mspx
Collection and use of information about your computer

This software contains Internet-enabled features that collect certain standard information from your computer ("standard computer information") and send it to Microsoft. Standard computer information includes certain information about your computer software and hardware, such as your IP address, operating system, Web browser software and version. The privacy details for each Windows Defender feature listed in this privacy statement disclose what additional information is collected and how it is used.

Collection and use of your personal information

When we need information that personally identifies you or allows us to contact you, we will explicitly ask you for it, except in the case of Microsoft SpyNet reports that you may choose to send to Microsoft (see below). The personal information that we collect from you will be used by Microsoft and its controlled subsidiaries and affiliates to provide the service(s) or carry out the transaction(s) you have requested or authorized, and it may also be used to request additional information on feedback that you provide about the product or service that you are using; to provide critical updates and notifications regarding the pre-release software; or to improve the product or service (for example, bug and survey form inquiries).

If you still have a problem with it, read here about how to unjoin SpyNet - http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/173602-microsoft-spynet-windows-defender.html
