What are the savings in relation to the cost of standby savers and timers?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0

if your kids are like mine they have tv,xbox,pc,phone charges etc
all plugged in 24/7 in their bedrooms.
now when they are good and remember they turn things off.
but kids being kids how often do things get left!
but even if your kids are 100% perfect the standy by power
used by things turned off but are in standby mode is huge.
so i worked out there lifestyle need for power so i could programme a timer that would be virtually undetected by them that turned off power when they would be asleep or out only.
as i found that "electronic plug in timers" can be programmed with a lifestyle for power in mind.
the mechanical timers just don't cut it as they don't have anyway of giving different and multiple on/off times and on selective days.
i put this programme in an excel doc to make it easy to programme the times needed. this format will suit the majority of elec timers.

can someone let me know the link works?
thx
its not a bad idea - especially as I think a lot of people will have some electronic plug in timers around anyway - I have a multway with 4 phone chargers in it, (work and personal) which I always forget to switch off...
May just try putting a timer onto it, I always charge phones in the evening - it could be switched off 2am till 4pm every day really - I did read somewhere that a mobile phone charger, plugged in costs £13 per year on average - is this not correct?
I am a bit surprised that people have been rude to the OP who is clearly sharing something they have found helpful... !0 -
Hi FC: not sure on the savings but like you say some ppl will have had timers for other short term uses maybe even xmas for those tree lights etc
so why not spend 10mins to programme it so it doesn't inconvience you for when it is off and save some money to boot.
if you save £35 a year it pays for a mot or even car tax if you'd been very lax about elec usage0 -
If leaving gadgets on standby is teens worse money wasting move you are doing well! In the last week DS has left a tap running all day (metered water but thankfully cold) and opened downstairs windows and patio door as it was too hot (heating was on). This is despite lots of prompts about turning stuff off and cost of gas/water/electricity. I'd settle for just the gadgets (though don't have many).somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0

it is not unbelievable if the items had been left on!
as i said READ THE POST
i bet someone could work it out to exact watt/penny.
3 tv's
3 sky boxes
3 xboxes
3 pc's
2 printers
1 router
2 surround speaker systems
2 laptops charging
stuff i've forgot no doubt
yes and some prudence elsewhere around the house
Your post was about the kid's bedrooms.
So!
They have 3 Sky Boxes that you switch off for most of day?(Sky don't allow that on Multi room) and they don't have Sky+ for recording.
Presumably as they have 5 computers you have a wireless router which you switch off most of the day?
The 'prudence around the house' bit might well save a lot!
The point espresso and I were making is that there is this over emphasis on standby consumption as main culprit for high consumption in a house.
Post after post complaining about huge electricity consumption always states "and I switch my TV off at the plug". If I leave any of my TVs on standby 24/7 it will cost less than £1 a year.
People seem to spend lots of money buying remote control devices(that in themselves use electricity and have batteries for the remote) to save a pittance.0 -
Hi guys,
Just to let you know of a device called a TV power down, you plug it in to your TV along with other items you want to switch off with the TV.
It just stops your electrical items being left on standby. Power downs do tend to have a plug for the TV, a section for peripherals which will also power down along with the TV and a section for an item you would want to stay on ie; in the case of a sky plus box.
You can get them in store or online from a range of shops.
Hope this helps.

heads up
b&q superstores are doing these electronic timers 3 for £10
awesome deal0 -
Turning your CH thermostat down 1 degree would probably save more energy than the standby usage on all those devices. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
