If you're getting " instead of 2 , then I would agree with the previous post of a dodgy SHIFT key. AFAIK, there's no other explanation for it. If the keyboard was on the wrong language (e.g. US) then the " and @ symbols would swap places.

The laptop is compaq Presarion model 2520 ea

Ok update I got windows loaded eventually but think that was down to ok the filter keys.

Although i now have win xp home on its still not right the screen display is approx 10 instead of 15.4 and some drivers havent loaded

I have driver disk but cannot access it from device manager update driver options, when I try to highlight the other places to look i get up the drop down box with it highlights all the text and wont allow me to input after. when browse option is used I can highlight the driver on cd but the ok button wont highlight long enough for me to select..

So I am thinking that filter key is coming active as maybe the shift key is stuck. although it appears free and this is stopping me from correcting errors grrrrrrrr !!

Any further suggestions on how to resolve these issues ?

you could copy the driver files/folders from the CD to somewhere on your C: hard drive and load them from there -just make sure they're unzipped
