It seems to me it must have detected the keyboard incorrectly.
A stuck [Shift] key seems more likely to me. Give them a prod and see if the problem goes away.

I would have thought so too if he hadn't specifically mentioned trying the shift key lots of times.
  • In that case, I'd suggest looking beneath the [Shift] keys for signs of damage to the underlying mechanism.

    I'd suggest either

-Keep fiddling with trying to get the numbers working on your existing keyboard
-finding a USB keyboard from somewhere (take the laptop to a friend who has one for this bit?)
-Was the PS2 keyboard connected since the machine was booted up? if not plug the PS2 keyboard in and reboot (PS2 is not 'hot swappable' like USB is)

......other than that i had a random theory involving partially disassembling the laptop, disconnecting the inbuilt keyboard and trying the PS2 one then but probably OTT and chance of it working is low :p

I've never understood why anyone thinks this is funny.
Especially as at this point in the install there probably isn't one anyway.

I've run machines with two mice before but not two keyboards - I don't know for sure if the keys would interact for instance. If it does turn out to be a faulty shift key (one hell of a coincidence assuming it was working before the reinstall) would it prevent the other keyboard working? Shift key down + number from numeric pad on my own keyboard results in nothing unlike the top row number keys.

Is there an "accessibility" option during the install?

I'm not sure but I think there was an option to have an "on-screen" keyboard for people who need it.

Try pressing the "Windows Key" + u

    See if that does anything...

  • I cant remember at what point you change the input/region settings on a fresh install.... but.... could it be that you havent set the keyboard layout to English uk.. and the regional settings as well ?

    Just a thought.........
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
  • I think we've reached the stage where someone has to read the manual for this lappy..there has to be a key to enable the number keys.
If you tell us the make/model I'll dig it out and RTFM for you :)

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to things like this - but just a thought.........
If you turn off the Caps Lock and press a letter, does it still come through as upper case?

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

Yes caps still display as I am at the windows key screen. I have f disked again and reloaded from fresh but still all the same.
Thinking now maybe a reload of compaq drivers is possibly the next coarse of action.
