Sorry I hadn't seen this post earlier. Official advice is that you shouldn't turn up at the passport office without an appointment, but if you are really in a pickle the passport office usually go out of their way to help. You just need to ignore the official advice and turn up at 9am and be prepared to wait.

Same thing happened to my son with the passport expired at the weekend and him due to fly on the Tuesday morning. Went to the passport office at 9am Monday and was told to come back after lunch where they fitted us in.
