Cancelled flight refund

bmi recently informed me that they were no longer to operate flights on a route I had booked a return flight for. I would be able to take the outward flight but not the return flight. I opted to go ahead with my outward flight but to take a refund for the return journey (booking a flight to a different airport with another carrier) as offered.

I have now received details of the refund. I won't be getting a refund of any amount for the British Air Passenger Duty or either the British or German Passenger Service Charge. These were shown as "one total each" on my original bill.....ie there was only one amount for each, not broken down into one amount for the outward flight & one amount for the return flight.

Are they correct not to give me any amount of refund for these, please ?

  • Oh, I'd better just make it clear.....I booked the return flight with another carrier myself....bmi know nothing about this
  • My friend had something similar. She missed her Lufthansa flight to Italy. She was not allowed to use her return flight. Rather than just buying a new outward flight, she had to buy a return as well. Apparently you have to fly 'in sequence'. I am incadescent with rage

if you dont fly they have to refund the PAS air tax for that flight/leg even Easy jet paid me
  • Thanks.....what about the Passenger Service Charge ? And do you have a reference for the PAS (ie something to back me up), please?
  • Apologies to people further up the thread....didn't know how to use the system, so didn't post the "thanks" button

If they cancelled the flight then they should refund you all you paid for it with no exclusions. BMI are notorious with trying to get away with not doing so.

If you persist they will either relent or not - in which case you will need to weigh up taking them to the small claims court. For small sums it may not be worth the hassle
  • What is your route? It's not necessarily the case that they are not refunding you, remember that the majority of taxes are for the ex-UK flight.

For example, I looked at a Lufthansa flight from Heathrow to Cologne.

The total tax is £98.80. Of that £66.20 is for the LHR - CGN flight and £32.60 is for the CGN - LHR flight.

So they have to refund you for any taxes on your flight that is cancelled. The Passenger Service Charge (UK) is the charge for flying out of the UK. It's not charged for the return sector. So it won't be refunded.
  • Thanks for the information......the route was East Midlands to Cologne & return.....we took the outward portion (East Midlands/Colgne)...so are not entitled to the Passenger Service Charge UK.....but what about the relevant portion of the Air Passenger Duty & The German Passenger Service Charge ?

That might be because it's charged on arrival in Germany (might!). How much did you pay, and how much were you refunded? Also, if there was a tax breakdown, advise and I will look at tomorrow for you.

I think this thread deals with the same matter from the same poster-and includes a prior discussion on refund/re-route aspects as well as the breakdown of the tax/passenger charge values you request. See http://flightmole.com/forum/showthread.php?t=674

As you say it might depend upon when the charge falls due to be paid. Does Germany (or a particular German airport) levy a designated charge for an arriving passenger which is recharged as a separate item within a passenger ticket value ?

Dont know about BMI but arent these values usually separated for each flight-outward and return- by an airline on the ticketing/purchase voucher?
