Visiting friends who are broke??

I live in London and my best friend lives up north. Bf and I are going to visit her and her bf this weekend. Reason why we arrange to come up was because they had planned on having a big night out with all their friends and invited us so we thought why not treat ourselves to a trip (our only holiday away from home this year) we have been saving up since May and have enough for this weekend :o . Anyway my friend decided she wanted us to spend quality time together just the four of us so had the big night out last saturday. Now they are broke and i dont know what to do. We still plan to go up there everything has been arranged (hotel and travel) but feel awful that they are having problems getting money together to spend time with us. What can we do? I mean if they had their own place we could buy drinks and have a meal at home but they dont so it be awkward to impose on their family. Any cheap ideas or suggestions please? thanks so much

SHE decided to spend quality time together so she had the party last week (knowing she will be skint AND you are coming for the party) and now she is telling you she is skint to spend that quality time together??

    Sorry, bulls***.

    She is not a friend.
  • Hi Jay83

I have to say you're being very understanding about this!

Whereabouts in the north are you going to - I'll rack my little brain and try to think of cheap things to do - I take it her and bf live with their parents.

Can't you just go to the cinema or something like that if you cannot stay in her house?

If you have to go out and she has no money, what do you want to do? Are we talking NO money or a little money (to cover cinema and maybe Nandos meal before-in my experience takes all night and the night comes up to about £25 a person)
  • Depends how skint they are and what they're interested in tbh

You could suggest going to an all you can eat buffet and make sure you go for lunch as it's usually around £7pp but bumps up to about £12pp in evening, from there could you go to a local or see whats on in the area?!?! Try this website, I find it a godsend when family tell me they're visiting last minute and I have nothing to entertain them:rolleyes:

You could offer to 'treat' them to a meal out.....assuming they're not the type to take the mick, obviously;) instead of getting them pressies

Sorry, not much help am I?!?! x

I'm skint however I always can create something to do with my friends!
I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!

  • OK I was trying to be nice but....what Any said! I think that's really out of order - especially when you've saved since May to be able to afford to go!!

Have you already paid for the hotel? If not I think I'd be inclined to cancel and do something for just the two of you. If she wanted the quality time so much then she should have held some money back - there's no way I would do what she's done especially if I knew it was someone's only break of the year! In fact I'm rather angry on your behalf.

Why not contact the hotel and ask to move the booking to nearer Christmas...if you are going anywhere near the big cities, you will be able to visit maybe the Manchester Christmas Markets (always a fab day out) or Leeds is good for Chrimbo shopping....then you don't miss out on your mini-holiday just because of your "friends" thoughtlessness ;)

She is lying through her teeth. Hopefully you have read your post back and realise this. She could at least have given you the chance to go out with all her friends, rather than taking it upon herself to bring the night forward. What sort of quality time involves doing nothing when you have gone to all this trouble and expense to go and see them? If you were going for the weekend there would have been plenty of time to still have the evening out and quality time together.

Cancel your arrangements and go somewhere by yourselves. What sort of trip would it be for you, not being able to go out anywhere nice and having to worry about her finances all the time.

I agree with Maggied, I am angry for you too.
  • Jay, I have to agree with most of the other posters, how very rude!

If, however, we've all got the wrong end of the stick and she really still wants you to visit then I think it's up to her to arrange the weekend seeing as she's the "hostess" and you're the guests.
